What can wing play and pace do?

If you dont know the answer to the above question then I suggest you watch manures game against Fulham. Lennon must stay wide right on Tuesday and we must buy a left sided player as Davids has not got the pace to play the left wing position effectively plus he drifts inside. Jenas has to buck his ideas up quickly as well or mid table here we come. COYS!

Couldn't agree more. Jenas seems to becoming a bit too cocky for my lking since the World Cup.

Robbie Keane should be starting not Defoe. Do this and we will play better, Defoe does little for the team and has not been scoring in the league for a while now. Fuck Downing ( pardon the language ) stop talking about him and concentrate on what we have. Jenas needs to push on and Zokora to hold. Boltons tactics snuffed us out and in turn we couldnt win the midfield battle. I think Davids is less effective as each game goes by and one more performance like that he should be dropped. We have quality players and that should be the kick in the backside they need I think we thought we had won the match before it even started. Underestimate your opponent and you have lost already thats what I think happened . Forget about bolton and lets look forward to Tuesday. The boys had better go out and give Sheff Utd a good belting on Tuesday and all will be well again its just a blip better it happens now than later in the season.

Davids is useless and has to be dropped. He is a headless chicken and is waste of space on the left. Would drop Jenas as well, far 2 careless and ineffective. Seriously losing patience with him. We have got other players 2 try- Ziegler, Huddlestone, Routledge, Ghali and hopefully Tainio will b back 4 Sheff Utd. My MF would be Lennon Left wing (at the minute just) Zokora in the centre with Huddlestone and Routledge out right. Tainio maybe in the centre with Zokora. Would give a bit of pace down both wings and give the other team something 2 think about instead of being all down the right hand side like we are at present. T.H.F.C

Anon 10.49pm, dont think he is being cocky, he's simply just not good enough at the moment and needs to be benched immediately. Maybe he does not know what to do when the expectation of creativity is placed on him, as before he let Carrick get on with all the passing, while he did the donkey work in the background. Now people are asking him to be creative, he looks nervous...I thought he was going to poo his pants infact! Re Davids should be dropped altogether immediately. Zokora should play his role from now on, with Huddlestone nurtured alomside him as the new Carrick. With a few full games, the lads confidence should grow. Play Tainio on the left as soon as fit as he is more direct and works as hard as Davids ever did. Play Keano in place of JD as you said or in the hole if we are playing with the pre-season 3 pronged attack, he is the only one who looked like he could create something when he came on yesterday. Give Routledge and Murphy a bench place too. We need to decide whether Murphy is good enough in the next 6 months or sell him. Routledge needs more playing time too, has great potential.

Went to the Bolton game and Spurs were poor. But I can't believe all the negative posts I've read everywhere today - particularly the criticism of Martin Jol.
Presumably these are the same 'fans' who hailed him as Mr. Wonderful last season.

Let's remember what MJ's done for the club and show some faith. Remember, we're only ONE GAME into the season. COYS.

Anon 11.28 - lol we wrote almost exactly the same opinion at the same time!

Anon 11.31 - I love MJ mate, for me the it is not "criticism of Martin Jol". We as fans are just frustrated and are entitled to air our frustrations because we love the club. Obviously MJ did not plan for that outcome and will know the obvious mistakes of team game plan which I am sure he will correct...its his job after all and is the reason why he is a top 5 prem manager and we're not after all. However I agree it's not the end of the world, and would have been a hard lesson to everyone in the Spurs team, notably the new players and MJ himself. So a win on Tuesday will ease the pain, and hopefully the next one too and a good result against the Mancs and this game will be almost forgotten.

kean was carrying a slight injury and was not sure if would make the match so thats why he did not start yes when he got on we looked a lot better
Davids was all over the pitch which should have been good if he still had the bite he had a few years ago but he was not bought for his playing contributes well thats what i think anyway
all the new guys looked at least ok my personal fav so far from what i have seen is
Benoit Assou-Ekotto
he seems to have the same work ethic as most of the team had last season they just need time to jel
roll on tuesday when we can really start our seasson

All of this anti-davids stuff is beyond belief. He was our best player yesterday by a country mile.He has to do 2 mens jobs, he has to try and get up the left, drop in and cover, he constantly wants the ball, he tries to drive us on while jenas and zokora were exchanging 5 yard "you have it, no you have it" passes.

Play zokora and hudds? Have you ever watched/played a game of football? They are both defensive mids, as is jenas for that matter. TT is the only man for the job and he can't stay fit.

We have got work to do no doubt, but it will come right.

I just get fed up with so many no nothings out there jumping on the latest bandwagon and at the moment it is davids. Our best player yesterday as he was for much of last season, simple as!

theres no fucking excuse if we don't buy a left winger! we've had three months to get one which just says that jol has had no intention of buying a quality left winger..........instead choosing to concentrate on positions that weren't as important! if we dont spend any more money this month then i cant see us doing well with all the games were gonna have.

and its all down to balance we have not got the balance right, and i think its down to mj he is picking names (and not a team).

Anon 11.48 and 11.49. Yes Davids did try hard, but he does not have it in terms of making constructive passes anymore and loses the ball often bumbling around with sideways and backwards passing along with Jenas. Our best player last season my ass, although he had a good first half of the season, but hey we are all entitled to out opinions. At least Zokora tried to carry the ball and delivered good set-pieces. And yes I played semi-pro level in my day thanks mate and love and breath the game. I agree with you on TT though, have always rated him and believe he should replace Davids when he's fit...sorry mate thats my opinion.

ps if we dont get a let winger kiss goodbye to a top four place

fickleness comes not from the desperate need to win, but rather, the need to show effort.

Saturday's game showed a complete lack of effort once they went 2 nil down. And when there was effort, it was effort without thought.

Yes, Davids wanted the ball all the time. But one needs to be able to do something with it. He got the ball, sat on it, was closed down, and then lost it. What's the use of having the ball then?

Bolton won the tactical game. Spurs didn't look like we had a plan B.

Oh well, its only emotional ownership, not real ownership.

robbo - looks heavy, been eatin pie-boy's left overs?
daws - ok
Davenprt - very week, couldnt win long balls legally
lee - crap as always. cant cross properly with right foot. staltery should play there at the moment
ekoto - good game. concentration not full.
lennon - cant perform to his usual standard, seldom get ball, wet pitch. tightly marked.
JJ - agreed, not being creative. should make more breakthrough the middle run to get opponent to pay attention and alert to him and get lennon's marker off.
zokora - was on auto-pilot thruout the game. scared to be bold. only started to make thru middle runs after 2-0 down. but then felt afraid of going all the way because no one will cover the holding role when he's attacking.
davids - did great for someone his age. the only 34yr old winger i know is figo. is davids = figo?
defoe - totally lost.
berbie - good run with ball attributes. but looks week. need to get some pie from robbo. even wind could blow him off the ball.
next match - robbo
stalteri daws davenport ekoto
lennon zokora keane jj
berbie defoe
keane = creative

how can some people say davids was our best player? everyone can see he was shit, even the prem plus commentators couldnt believe he stayed on and zokora went off. i keep reading as well that zokora delivers a mean free kick / corner - did he fuck on saturday !!!

back to the original post, wing play works. pace scares the hell out of the opposition. davids is simply a liability. if he is going to play, it must be as a central midfielder, not as a left winger, which he aint.

for what its worth, my team against sheff utd;

robbo
lee daws davenport ekotto
lennon zokora ghaly/murphy ziegler
keane berbatov

would be balanced, pacey and creative.

I think we'll beat Sheffield united and all will be forgotten but i am worried about Davids. He doesn't seem capable of passing to someone in a spurs shirt. I wasn't impressed much last year either. He's a good ball winner but after that i think we're carrying him. If only Tainio could stay fit for mor ethan a week we'd be fine. I thought Zokora did well, few more games and he'll be running the show. We didn't get the ball to Lennon or the strikers enough. And i also think we missed Ledley at the back. It was disappointing but losing to Bolton away isn't the end of the world and it's certainly a lot better than drawing at home to Villa!!

I think the Bolton game proved that unless we can keep Ledders fit this year we are going to struggle at the back. Davenport's performance as a centre half was about as bad as I've seen in a Spurs shirt for some time. He got dragged out of position too much and his starting position for any defensive header was just terrible and hence he lost most of them. I hope I'm wrong about the guy but I can see why Davenport has been rumoured to be sitting in the departure lounge for some time.

As i keep saying. JJ is far too overrated as a player. he is consistant, but only consistant at being average.

i give him respect that he has a good engine, and can keep running from one end to the other, and he often comes back to help defend and often pushes forward. but his timing, and movement actually is piss poor to say the lest. his positional awareness isnt great. his passing skills are not great, his vision is not there, his reading of the game doesnt exist.

he plays his game blindly, relying on speed to make his impact on games. speed alone is useless unless you can back it up as a marksman or good cross.

if we dont end up buying a left midfield, we need to possibly look at putting JJ down the left wing, allowing tanio the chance in middle, or give zeigler the chance down there

Am I the only one who can see a solution? Danny Murphy. I know to some of you this may sound slightly daft but he is a better attacking midfielder than Jenas, has an eye for the killer pass, scores from midfield, remember the first half of last season at Charlton? there was talk of him reclaiming a place with the national side.

Davids is shocking. His passing is simply dreadful. SHouldn't be playing. I think Martin Jol has done a great job of improving the squad, and I won't criticise him based on one result. But my I must confess that I dunno why Davids is playing. Team should be (tuesday)

Robbo
Lee Dawson Huddlestone Ekotto
Lennon Zakora Keane Ziegler
Defoe Berbatov

At least Ziegler gives a little width to the left. Thought Zokora looked actually quite good other night. Robbie a must - 100% effort, drops deep, gives options for all.

Davids wasn't great on sat with some misplaced passes and giving the ball away at times but at least he played like he gave a shit.
What was more worrying was the form of Jenas, he looked lost, hardly touched the ball and didn't do anything worthwhile when he did get the ball.
We looked short of ideas and had little or no creativity until Keane came on and wanted the ball at his feet further up the park.
Pasing was slow and laboured and didn't do enough to pull bolton out of shape, hence the reason why Lennon was ineffective.
has to be better on Tuesday because Sheffield Utd will come and want to spoil our game and if we run out of ideas as quickly as we did on saturday we're in for a tough night

Jenas is a waste of space - this is something I was saying all last season. The guy offers us nothing more than a handful of decent'ish games each season.
Just what does he offer us?
I for one was glad he was out injured for the game at the scum....If he'd of played then I reckon we would have lost.
I dont even rate him as backup!

I think Jenas should not play next to Lennon. Because they both seem to take the same runs when we attack.

Next match he should be next to the left "winger" (haha..winger..lol) and Zokora should stay next to Lennon and just break up play and start the build up.

We had 3 players doing the same thing: You could have thrown a blanket over Zok, Lennon and Jenas.

Seems like everyone is forgetting about Danny Murphy and the reason we got him last season. He is possibly one of the few players in the Spurs team who can provide vision and creativity in his passing to the game. MJ should give him a chance to prove himself and we might get to see Murphy perform to his high standards as seen early last season...

I think I speak for most fans when I say we are all dissapointed with the Bolton game and performance in general but such is life and these things happen. The most important thing now is how we react in our next game so lets forget about Bolton and think about that. BMJ is a legend end of and anyone who says otherwise is a moron although in all honesty I have not read any real comments slating him and rightly so. We all love Tottenham and all want success so you have to take the rough with the smooth as you do with all things. The season has started on a bit of a downer but lets not let it fester away at us and focus on what we have which is a quality squad, lots of young quality players and top class management team who want what we all want. Bolton away is now history in my reckoning and we have to give our team time to adjust to the changes made in pre-season no doubt we will turn it around dont forget the king is alive and will return to lead us again. The boys had a bad day at the office and we all have that now again so have an opinion but lay off the needless abuse people its counter productive and a bit out of line this is the best set up in a long long time we should be over the moon not under the weather. Im convinced we will do Sheff Utd tomorrow and show the rest what were really about roll on tuesdat nightt. IN JOL WE TRUST.

I was really disappointed on saturday concerning how we played against bolton. Now, i suggest that we bring in a quality left winger & right back. Attacking midfielder in the form Kevin Nolan & a 4th striker, like Mido.
At the same time we need to get rid of people like, Edger Davids, paul Stalteri and Danny Murphy. The problem we have now is that there's not enough time in the transfer window to deal with these problems. My fellow spurs fans, l say we need to solve these problem areas as matter of urgency.
Martin Jol, please read these suggestions and, think over it.We need to shoot up that league table immediately.
Thanks.

Surely anytime a player plays alongside other players who are not of the required quality or are playing out of position ie; Assou-Ekotto with Davenport/Davids or Dawson with Lee or Zakora with Jenas or Defoe/Berbatov with Jenas/Davids. It's far more likely that the better quality player will come off looking worse than he is because of the extra pressure of having to cover for their inadequacies or mistakes.

Our new purchaces' history's are easy to check on the web and they are without doubt decent quality at the very least. With a decent L winger, R back, Playmaker & Captain back we would be a completely different proposition. Things will happen but at a speed appropriate to the needs and requirements of the club. Just because we did better than expected last year doesn't mean we ceased to be a club very much in 'development'. We're a good couple of years away from being a consistantly great side. So stop panicking and enjoy the ride. (Remember how it used to be?)

Go on the Spurs!
