New signing in the bag, apparently

According to reliable sources over at FTL Spurs have completed a new signing today. Strong rumors coming from the French media suggest it is highly rated Hatem Ben Arfa. if so this would prove a major coup for the club as he is very highly rated in the French league and abroad. The mystery signing is due to be announced within the next 24 hours.

Of course we may have signed no one so take it all with a pinch of salt until it is officially announced on the Spurs website.

Doesn't sound like a bad shout or an unrealisric prospect to me. The draw tomorow could make us more attractive and he's hailed as the next Zidane - gotta be worth a pop whether he lives up to it or not!

Lyon website's first team section lists him as a left-winger, although his profile says striker. I think the early zidane / henry / duff mould is the vague consensus. Quality dribbling skills, supposedly a bit selfish. Could be useful but depends on the price.

FTL = From The Lane

Translation is something like ....

Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed Thursday evening that two players of its medium of provided ground were probably going to leave the club: Hatem Ben Arfa, under contract with Lyon for one year, would be very close to signing for Tottenham, while Benoît Pedretti should be lent to the AJ Auxerre. “I saw the leaders of Tottenham who “make the sustained pressure” to engage Hatem. Is needed that we discusses it this evening (Thursday)”, explained the president of the OL on Internet site of the club. As for Pedretti, considering “its exemplary behavior”, “we will facilitate its wishes. Auxerre is a rich club. That would thus astonish me that it does not manage to give satisfaction to Benoît and the Olympic Lyonese”.

Ben Arfa is a left winger - who can also play "in the hole". He has had a couple of injuries but does have Champions League experience.

He starred for the U17s French side in the Euro Championships - and bagged a load of goals.

He's highly rated en France - but does come with the baggage of being a bit of a runt. MJ will sort him out though surely.

P.S. This is over all the reputable message boards - FTL, COYS, GG and Spurs Community.

Stoof.

I dunno what to believe anymore with all the so called imminent transfer rumours never materialising. However if his chairman did say that, sounds like we are in discussions with them. However it's funny all other rumours are linking us to Stewart Downing. Which one are we really going for or are we going for both??? Is this Ben Arfa lad really that good and the answer to all our left wing problems or does he just have potential? did he play regularly for Lyon last season?

I signed him in Champo. He had great stats but rarely played due to my strength in that position, and eventually I sold him at a slight loss to Manchester City, where he went on to do ok.

I hope this helps.

Julio Baptista is all over the papers.More like the kind of players we should be paying the big bucks for.

He is exactly what we should be looking at.Pace, physique, skills and pedigree.

Looking at our team this year without Carrick, he will fit in nicely.

If we get him that partially assuage the pain of losing out Duff.

This is so much better than the Ben Arfa rumours. We are no more at the midtable stage, where investments in the Mendes and Zieglers of this world will suffice. Time to invest in real quality ALSO.In people which will make us the elites that we should be.Wenger have so far invested in Rosicky and he is quality. But if we land Baptista, that is quite a coup of the Rosicky category.

Why would Lyon offload the new Zidane to us for a paltry fee ?

I will be happy if Ben Arfa can do a inpersonation of Duff....

Talking about the new Zidane...please take at look at this 17 year old Turkish international Nuri Sahin of Dortmund.Heard Man U and Arsenal are interested.

well ive looked on all the usual link sites and i cant find anything - its not even on fromthelane !!
roll on the transfer window closing so we can concentrate on football.
when a player is being cuddled by jol on the pitch holding a spurs shirt, ill believe he is coming to play for the famous spurs, until then paxton, stick to the better discussion blogs, which are normally good topics, rather than rumour mungering.
didnt you say we had signed duff ??!!!

I know Ben Arfa looks like a gamble now but so did Aaron Lennon when we signed him. We should be looking at bringing in both young potential like Ben Arfa AND highly rated, established talent like Baptista.

I know he's a good player and all that (even if I do think he's slightly overrated), but why do we need Baptista?? That'll just disrupt the midfield we are already struggling to accomodate... why buy more then we need just cos he's good? We NEED Ben Arfa (or any decent left winger) we don't NEED Baptista, I also read somewhere he doesn't particularly want to play for us.. so if his heart aint in the move it's prob for the best it don't go through, especially ior the type of money he'd command?? what you think?

The stories on newsnow have us linked with Ben Afra, Downing, Malbranke, Baptista, Nolan and Grella. Whilst some of these are clearly rubbish, I think we are probably in for downing, with ben afra as a back up signing if that falls through. Similarly, a bid for Baptista, with a last minute bid for Malbranke if we cant get the big man from Madrid. Nolan and Grella sound like rubbish to me, as is the Kuffour link (agent talk). I still think we will go back in for Chimbonda for 5m.

Some people have questioned the signing of Baptista. I cant understand why. He is quality, can play as a strong forward type (which would comliment Berbatov, Keane and Defoe). He would also challenge Jenas for the creative midfield spot. Seems like perfect sense to me.

Arfur is a 5 foot 10 slightly built left winger who can score goals. (15 in 22 games for the under 17's) He made the leap into Lyon's first team two seasons ago and played four champions league games to much acclaim before breaking his collarbone. Was offered the Turkish first squad at 17 but wanted to wait in hope for France.
primarily a goal maker.

Baptista? Wouldn't he take Jenas' place? Here's hoping for downing, arfur, baptista and a better rightback than Stalteri & Lee.

Go on the Spurs!

Can anyone explain why Ziegler is not getting a look in? Was he not voted fans young player of the year a couple of seasons back? He looked quality back then, so what's happened?

On the Baptista bid (I think there is some truth in the rumours), it's the management way of showing ambition.

The issue is not that we do not need any more central midfielders. But a quality player who will help us made that step up MIGHT be avialable.Baptista would be a coup whether used as a striker or midfielder.Arsenal have the likes of Gilberto Silva, we must get similar quality whenever the chance arise.

We needed a lift after losing out Duff and Carrick and we need a BIG name.Baptista qualities would fit the premiership perfectly.

We have the cash fellas....to buy a right back, a left winger and a striker.

The Chimbonda saga is developing as expected...Wigan trying to tie down Chimdonda with a new deal which hopefully he will reject. If that happens Wigan have no choice but to meet us half way before 31st August. 5mil is the expected fee.

I think Downing is a big possibility.Ben Arfa would be bought with a nominal fee.

The wild card, I think would be Baptista.... my gosh its never boring being a spurs fan coming close to the end of the transfer window in recent years... thanks Levy.

I hope we buy Ben 'Arthur'!!ust because I hate having money burning a hole in my pocket and I've been itching to spend that £14m from Carrick, the four quid for Reid and the amazing £1m for Marney. Would hope to see that money pumped back into players and not just swallowed up by the club. It always worries me when clubs don't spend it straight away as they seem to swallow it up and hope that nobody notices! Please buy a left winger! And for the people who suggest that you can't play with two pacey wingers...what the *@=$?! Our team would terrorise defences if we got the balance right. Would like to see Arthur on the left with Lennon right, Tainio, Davids, Zokora & Davids fighting for CM places. COYS!!
