Duff to join Newcastle

Unfortunatly the Duff deal has fallen through which is sadly how it goes in football. While I would have been delighted if he joined Spurs it is clear that he is only interested in money as he is being paid £85,000 a week in a team that doesn't need a left winger but a new defence and striker. The fee Newcastle agreed with Chelski was over £12 million pounds according to the usual message boards FTL and COYS. For that money they are welcome to him.

Better news suggests that Carrick is staying :-) If true, and I hope it is, then it is fantastic news - who would you rather have? Carrick or Duff? Easy answer for me.

I think Levy also deserves some credit for refusing to let a greedy agent hold the club to ransom.

COYS!

27 injury prone and over-priced. Or talented left winger. I think Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool should be happy.

Spurs have stuck to their principles on this. Yeah lost a good player, but not over payed.

Newcastle have done well, yet you have to worry about desperation in their signings, ie- will pay big every time, yet often injury prone. Just a warning.

As a spurs fan quite happy - so long as we sign a left winger and a right back to go with other excellent deals so far.

I know this is a Spurs weblog, but could you guys consider for a second that the sums suggested in this article may be exaggerated? All of the "impartial" sources, such as SKY and BBC, quote wages and transfer fee well below the estimates in this article.

As a Newcastle fan, I can see that Spurs are on the up and I truly wish you guys the best in breaking the top four next season. But I really wish that you'd quit your bitter perspective to NUFC. Let's hope both clubs do well next season, not just one.

Having watched a fair amount of Spurs and of Aaron Lennon, I don't think that Jol would employ two out-and-out wingers on a regular basis, especially away from home, and when you have such a fine prospect in Lennon, why spend yet more cash on midfield players? (Spurs already spent cash on the likes of Murphy, who barely gets a game!) I think Spurs should strengthen at full back, as your midfield looks excellent already, especially if you keep wor lad Carrick (considering his allegiances, I would be most surprised and disappointed if he joins ManUre).

Incidentally, it should also be pointed out that under Souness, Newcastle had a reasonable defence by Premiership standards (Boumsong, who is hopefully on his way out, aside), but needed to score more frequently. Under Roeder, the pattern is the same but not as pronounced. Why then, does this article criticise our defence yet further? Criticise the goalscoring: this has been the (uncharacteristic) problem of NUFC for the past few years.

Let's hope, therefore, that NUFC and Spurs both get the players they need. Spurs don't need Duff, and NUFC don't need him at the price quoted in this article. A scenario that suits both parties suits the Premiership - who else but these two (and, I graciously admit, Spurs moreso) can challenge the Premiership's elite?

Best of luck to Spurs this coming season...

Not 85k\week but 60k\week - less than he was offered to stay at Chelsea, so the accusation of going for the money hardly ring true. He could've stayed where he was and got more.

Not sure people should be disappointed by losing out. After all, in a season that was supposed to be unsuccessful for him, he did better than Aaron Lennon in almost every department:

At least Newcastle was made to pay over the odds. If we aren't gonna get the player, let's not allow our rivals to nick 'em on the cheap! Good business. Plus, it demonstrates how Jol, Levy & DC have their collective finger on the transfer pulse. As we've now seen with the Berbatov & Zokora deals, our trio is first in the know, and will act swiftly when they determine whether a move is correct. Duff woulda been perfect, but I've no doubt Spurs will find another quality left winger. Why Duff prefers Newcastle only he will know, but the barcodes are like Tottenham in that they are also a team with history and great fans. But Spurs are building something special, and one duffin' setback ain't gonna change that.

Duff may have done better in every department but one thing we need to remember regarding that statement; Lennon is 8 years Duff's junior and I can never remember Duff being as talented as Lennon at his age. To be honest I cant remember the last out and out english winger as talented as Lennon.

Although this isnt about Lennon a comment made earlier regarding Spurs employing 2 out and out wingers, as entertaining as it would be, Spurs would be very vulnerable, especially considering the experience of the new full backs MJ has bought in, I would much rather a player like Sorin for a few seasons and then splash out on a true winger allowing time for the full backs development.

This article is typically tainted with sour grapes from a fan that knows a good player has opted for a different club.

I cannot understand the superior attitude of the spurs fans. Only in the past few seasons have you pushed a step close to the top 4. Over the duration of the premiership Newcastle have put Tottenham to the sword with devastating displays, most recently the 3-1 victory in April.

Tottenham have good potential but their success relies on Carrick and Lennon. If either of these players leave or are injured then they'll suffer.

In Newcastle's defence Roeder is only starting to shape his squad, whereas Jol seems yet to have found concrete formation or tactic.

I think personally that Damien Duff could be a good signing with his experience in the champion leagues but the price is too high..I think that Zeigler must get the chance to prove himself. He is young and can still improve...so why not trying Ziegler instead on spending huge sum....

Personally I kinda relief to hear he moves to Newcastle! because he'll costs us a lot! I'd rather have Gareth Baryy with us he might not as quick as Duff but we need a versatile player like him who can play both defense and offense...last but not least~! get Lua-lua he rejected Pompey last offer! I'm a big fan of Lua2! and he's also a spurs fan! so what are you waiting for Comolli?~!

Increadable how fans suddenly can find all the bad things about a player when he won't join their club. From what i've seen of Damien Duff, he's an excellent winger, he has done great for Chelsea and he should be a good sign for any other premiership club, including both Spurs and Newcastle.

But...

As a Newcastle fan i can't stop wondering why buy a left winger, when we have maybe the most talented left winger in the premiership, N'Zogbia, Milner can play there as well. Spending £10m on Duff seems very stupid to me, and I would rather have seen him joining Spurs. We need strikers and fullbacks, not midfielders. But best of luck to Duff. And to Spurs by the way.

If Duff genuinely wants more first team action, then joining Newcastle is a better bet for him than Spurs or staying put at Chelsea. Perhaps he was telling it how it really was? Rare for players and agents these days!
Good luck to the Geordies; they are not our competition. Our only focus outside WHL should be L'pool, Scum, ManUre and Chelski.

I agree we should not be paying over 7mil for a player that has such a bad injury record but I would like to get an answer to this question:

Can Mr Levy please come clean and give us the detail of the "so called" settlement with Chelsea over the Arnesen affair? We were led to belive that the interest of the club had been settled in the matter and that we have come to some "arrangement" with Chelsea. This was not a cash settlement. ( I am a share holder and the club financial statements do not show any kind of cash payment. It was therefore suggested that we had some kind of deal where we were to get "cut price players" for any players leaving the club. We made offers for Cole, turned down as we did not give them the right fee, Johnson, no deal. Now Duff? Please Mr Levy can you tell us how you looked after the inerest of our club as so far it seems that you were just told to F off and go away!

Unfortunately is seems you may just have done exactly that and we were just shafted after all.....the secrecy was just a smokescreen for your failure!

i think duff has gone for a very high price. he only had one more year left on his contact. £6 million tops for any player like that. newcastle always pull out all the stop for a big name player to keep their 51000 home fans happy. i think we still need 4 players in and maybe a few out the other way.
i'm looking forward to seeing some of the new players today and next weekend at the inter game. come on spurs lets push for 4th place and dont give up late points in games.

Spot on Newcastle manager and Shepherd needed to act quickly after an abysmal display last saturday during which they were booed off at half time as some players looked disinterested and not up for it.After the game they had extra training and a roasting from, Roeder,Parker was late for his man of the match award. They are desperate and its no surprise tht this has led towards having to pay over the odds for a player in an effort to appease the supporters. Spurs do right by backing off and not matching the terms, we have paid the price before for panic buys.

We offered Chelski 5-7million for a player in the last year of his contract which was rejected. Mourinho did not want to sell Duff to Spurs-it is as simple as that. They know about the revolution happening in N17. Duff would have been ideal but DC and MJ know what they are doing.

I think we should now move for Pablo Aimar, Valencia want to get rid of him, and the fee is quoted around 6-7m. Jol was talking in interviews about standard 4-4-2 not being flexible enough, so maybe Aimar drifting from the left as Tainio and Murphy attempted to do last season would be a good way to go?

As DC said on the Spurs website, 'Jol only wants players that are commited to the Tottenham cause'. If Duff is only interested in money, then he will never play with the commitment and passion that the team did last season. We won a lot of points, not just on ability, but with a true never give up attitude.
In a player we need both, ability and a true desire and commitment to winning.

Although signing duff would have been exciting with lennon on the other side, it doesnt offer much flexibility and could leave us vunerable. I would be keen to sign both lua-lua and sorin. This offers us good flexibility in that sorin can play both full back and left midfield (and centre back), and lua-lua could play left midfield and as a second (or third striker). This gives us many more options than just duff, if we needed to go more defensive away from home, it would result in a central midfielder doing the job again!

Magic...that will ease the fears that he is not another east european dud alla Rebrov. His great double will inspire him to want more of the same. The thing I am really impressed about also is that as our world cup players are still away, the fringe players came in and seemed to have done very well. Will be interesting against Inter next week.

The 3 pronged attack looks exciting, but may compromise Lennon and natural width at times, guess he will come back to give us that option.

Overall we look in goodshape, maybe one or two new full-backs and possibly a back up striker would strenghthen the side further.

RB - any of Trabelsi/Chimbonda or Micah Richards.

LB/LM - Bridge/Barry or other good left sided player.

Would like Davenport and Gardner to be given a chance at centre defence back up as any other available players seem ridiculously expensive...10 million for Curtis Davies!?...Please!!!

And if a player wants to choose any other club over Spurs, so be it. Who knows his reasons? I'm quite happy not to have a player who doesn't want to play for us. I think its not the 10 mil that we won't pay Chelsea but probably Duff wage demands.

Duff would have been a superb addition to our team and if he had considered our team and that of Newcastle, it would have been a no contest. If it is for footballing reasons, it would be fantastic for him and for spurs. If he wants the money, thats life and good luck to him.

My only concern is that Newcastle is breathing down our neck and is one of our closer competitors.

Other than Robben, I really can't see anyone either in the premiership or the recently concluded WC that could excite us.

Levy and Jol had done a wonderful job so far.But we have hit a bottleneck.

Do we start paying superscale wages that would attract the big names or maintain the present wage structure.Remeber the big 4 do pay wages higher than us.

It's not a easy question to answer. For on one hand you want to improve the team while on the other you try not to fall into the Leeds crash.

We would see the wisdom of our transfer policy in the news season to come.

No point discussing that with a bunch of thick mugs.It is by no mistake that London is the commercial capital of England, can you imagine it being in Newcastle, run by a load of thick geordies lol!

Anyway, Newcarshole Utd is a poor man's northern version of Chelsea, except for at least Chelsea win things with all the money they spend, where as Fred Sheperd is just an Abramovich wannabee, but will never have a fraction of the money, power and success that the Russian has.

Carrick is a decent player (albiet a Northern Monkey) and i would prefer to keep him in the squad but £18 million, YES PLEASE.

He is nowhere near worth that.

Fucking Great Business.

We had plenty of options & cover in central midfield anyway and remember we have a young lad who can plass the ball as well as Carrick, and can TACKLE too.........Tom Huddlestone, step up to the plate.

Hopefuly he will get a chance in the first team this season and show us all the potential he has.

as for Necarsul being a 'Big' club

bollocks you talk. haven't you heard of trying to build a team ?. Carrick is by far your best midfielder/player and you sell him.
I remember Chelski offering Arsenal 2 seasons ago 50m for Terry Henry.
They turned it down because they keep the players they want to .

Carrick knows he's going to a better team, bigger club with a great chance of winning trophies...all the things your pisspot club pretends to be but isn't. Manu rate carrick very highly, which is why they are paying big money for him and your club is letting him go ?

Tottenham is full every week and has been for years and years and is expensive to get in, with a massive waiting list of season ticket holders, it an area heavily populated by teams in the top two divisions of the country. Imagine when we start winning things where we will be...at least we can remember when we last won something, you guys have to ask your dads...if you know who they are...northern mugs...practically sweaty socks!

To say you left Arsenal's higbury thinking how big there club is - you could only fit 38,000 gooner twats in there along with you gayboys, so how that can feel any different from 36,000 mighty lillywhites at Spurs makes me think that you are a jobless parasite on society that cannot even count. They are welcome to their new baseball stadium, the atmosphere seemed complete shite when bignose berkamp finally fucked off. They even had to get someone on the PA to wake the fans up and get them cheering, gutless goons!!!

By the way, talking of players leaving clubs to do better and win things...funny you should mention Gazza, cos he left you shit little team for SPURS, and WON the FA CUP and got in the England team to semi final WC! Twat!!! David Ginola was another one who left you for us and Won the league cup, and Jenas will no doubt be too soon as well as that seems the trend. ha ha. must really hurt that one when he says he is so happy at Spurs, especially as he can now understand the supporters.

Couldnt say the same about anyone leaving for newcastle to win things, as it was 1951 when you last something wasnt it! better ask your pikey dad ha ha ha. mugs

We make people like Defoe and Carrick worth more than before, you guys only make others worth less and less.

As mentioned in the previous posts, Ginola became player of the season under us when he left you pathetic guys.

So don't get carried away with the Duff signing , yes we want him.But he choose the wrong club.

Spurs is the only club who can realistically challenge the big 4.

Carrick is not our best player...in fact we don't have one.We have quality over the park and unlike Liverpool we don't depend on a talisman like Gerrard.

Keane, King, Dawson and Carrick(used to be) were the backbone of the team.We have lost a vital cog but that is life, we will have to manage and in Levy, we can always trust that he will find a way.

We lost arnesan and Satini, but our brilliant chairman had overcome both storms. He will do so again

Carrick was not our best player Geordie dumbass. United & Fergie were so desperate to make at least one signing to appease their fans that they have paid DOUBLE what he is worth in todays market. we do not have anyone head and shoulders above carrick in class, but thats cos we have a very good squad of hih ability and potential. Robinson, Defoe, Keane, King, Dawson, Lennon i would rate in the same bracket with the King being the best due to experience. We also have lots others either about to emerge thru age, time with spurs or who we have just signed, so READ IT AND WEEP. Ameobi, Boumsong, Luque and all the other twatts whose names i cannot even remember your lot signed for way over the odds...apart from a couple your squad reads as a pile of shit.

As for sacking Jol, you are havin a laugh. More like knighting him after another succesful season of steady progression under our management team. We are realistic, we are not expecting them to shit miracles, but if we do manage to keep up the pace we have started and either Zakora or Huddlestone fills Carricks boots then watch out cos i reckon as well as a strong league campaign we gonna win a cup! (BTW - they are what you get when you win something newcastle, in case you had forgotten)

Fellow spurs fans - Ask Arsenal fans and the intelligent ones will tell you that Spurs are a team to be reckoned with - check out their websites aint it nice to read for a change!!!

Is this Geordie guy still here?!! How many days?? But this Geordie has been logging on for days!!! I cringe and feel embarassed for him (kinda like seeing some butcher a song at Karoki)

Does he have a life? The evidence shows not, fuck, proof it really is grim up north.

I saw the Newcastle press conference unviel Duff on Sky Sports and he stated that because he supported Chelsea it wasn't right he went to another London team. Fair enough, you gotta admire the guy for it buut don't read any more into it.

Read some of the forums dating back months, you'll realise hardly any spurs fan wanted him, he's inconsitant and injury prone. Spurs fans are on record on this site stating we don't want him and some clown comes on this site taunting us about him.

I cringe again

Fuck to the job centre you Geordie scum.

£18 million for Carrick, hell yeah!! We would be silly to turn that amount of money down. Yes he was a very good player but far too soft for my liking and he did many a lot of mistakes.

Huddlestone will be the man soon, with the Davids to learn from he's in safe hands.

neewky boy here, I strongly suspect the only reason you southern twats are showing such glee for getting 18m for a player is because you are obviously not used to getting that kind of money coming inwards. it must be a first for you guys right ?

your club is showing real signs that you will not be breaking the top 4 ever.
This is because a)Carrick wanted to leave to go to manu and join a club with a real chance of winning something big (and I mean not the carling cup)He obviously sees your club as one that doesn't have a realistic chance of improving much further...

The initial fee is believed to be around £13m, with the remainder of the money likely to be based upon the club's success, Carrick's international appearances and the time he remains at Old Trafford.

West Ham are reported to be in for a windfall when the transfer goes through, with a sell-on clause included as part of the deal that took him to White Hart Lane.

I was a bit disappointed when I read that above. we may only get 13m at the end of the day and then west ham get a chunk of the sell on fee, usually 25% so that leaves 10m. we paid nearly 3m so it only leaves about 7m or less once you take out other fees to agents/lawyers etc.

not so great really is it ?

you prat, I'm a spurs man. above I have taken quotes from the bbc's website. there is a sell on fee due to west ham. the normal amount is 25%. here it is in full. and yes, if he isn't a success at manu, we will ONLY get 13m.

The England midfield man is understood to have signed a contract worth around £50,000-per-week.

Carrick paid tribute to Spurs coach Martin Jol after completing the formalities of his switch from White Hart Lane.

He added: "I've had a great time at Spurs and the club has been brilliant for me.

"There is an excellent squad full of top players and a number of younger lads coming through the ranks as well. I can only see successful times for the club in the future.

"Martin is a great manager and has done an enormous amount for my career.

"Without any doubt he has helped develop me into a better player. He gave me a chance when I needed it, stood by me and I will always thank him for that."

The clubs agreed a deal for the player last week - but the fee was not made public until Spurs issued a statement to the Stock Exchange on Monday.

The initial fee is believed to be around £13m, with the remainder of the money likely to be based upon the club's success, Carrick's international appearances and the time he remains at Old Trafford.

Ferguson confirmed the news to the club's television channel MUTV, saying: "Michael has completed his medical, we are going to be having a press conference on Wednesday I think.

"He has settled down fine, I spoke to him today. I said to him 'I'm giving you the number 16 jersey' so he was delighted at that.

"I think that showed great courage because sometimes players are a bit superstitious about things like that but he was keen and said he would gladly take number 16."

Carrick had two years left on his deal at White Hart Lane but rejected a new contract offer in the wake of United's persistent interest.

"This is a move that Michael wants to make," Spurs boss Martin Jol told the club's official website.

"We have given him every reason to stay but he has asked to be allowed to leave."

The sale of Carrick represents a massive profit for Spurs, who signed him from West Ham for £2.75m two years ago.

West Ham are reported to be in for a windfall when the transfer goes through, with a sell-on clause included as part of the deal that took him to White Hart Lane.

Carrick is expected to make his first United appearance in the Amsterdam tournament, probably against Porto on Friday.

The midfielder has won seven England caps, making his debut when coming on as a substitute against Mexico in 2001.

Carrick was part of England's World Cup squad but he made only one appearance in Germany this summer, in the 1-0 win over Ecuador in the first game of the knockout stages.

Carrick started for England against Ecuador at the World Cup

United manager Ferguson stepped up his pursuit of Carrick once it became clear that the transfer of Red Devils striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid for a reported £10.2m would go through.

However, Ferguson denied reports that he is also keen to sign Carrick's Tottenham team-mate Jermain Defoe.

Bernie Kingsley, of Tottenham fanzine Cock-a-Doodle-Do, told BBC Sport: "The general view among Tottenham fans is that it is a good deal. I don't think fans will be desperately upset.

"I have not spoken to anybody who, when £18.6m became available, would have spent that on Michael Carrick.

"You should not let good players go, particularly to clubs you are hoping to be competing against.

Losing Carrick is a massive blow for Spurs

KL
606: Have your say

"But for that sort of money - and with midfielders Tom Huddlestone and Didier Zokora at the club - it has got to be good business."

But Mark Longden of the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association told BBC Sport: "I cannot understand what is going on.

"But people have questioned Sir Alex Ferguson's judgment in the past and finished up with egg on their face and I hope it happens again."

Enough of Carrick..he is gone.

I'm surprised at the lack of interest in Nigel Reo Cocker. He was awesome in the FA cup final and stood toe to toe with Steve G.

I quite like the tot of him in a spurs shirt. He would also give the physical presence and pace that was lacking with Carrick in the holding role.A different type of holding player but potentially a even better one than Carrick.

I think it would be asking too much of either Zokora or Huddlestone to step in immediately to take over Carrick mettle.Reo Cocker would be good, west Ham captain, he would fit in immediately.

yes he has gone but the prick above has had a go at me because he doesn't like the facts.

Wenger rules out move for Zokora

The highly-rated Zokora is expected to leave St Etienne this summer
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said he is not interested in signing St Etienne midfielder Didier Zokora.
Zokora comes from the same Ivory Coast school of football as Arsenal duo Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue, but Wenger said: "We are not after him."

Wenger hopes to add to his squad during the January transfer window but will not spend over the odds.

"It would be good to find one player - and if we find one, we will buy - but not just for the sake of it," he said.

He also ruled out a move for ex-Leeds midfielder Olivier Dacourt, saying "he's a good player but it would only be a short-term solution and I have not thought about it."

Wenger needs to strengthen his defence, especially with Toure and Eboue off to the African Nations' Cup in mid-January, but said: "I hope to have Ashley Cole back from injury by then."

Arsenal, who have slipped to eighth in the table, have money to spend having sold Patrick Vieira last summer while signing only Alexander Hleb.

Ivory Coast star Zokora had been touted as a possible target and the 25-year-old midfielder has permission to leave St Etienne at the end of this season for about £10m.

Zokora's agent Franck Belhassen recently claimed "Arsenal have shown more interest than other clubs".

I don't buy the idea of patience, we need quality and we need it NOW !

Graveson is avialable and probably on the cheap, we can spend peanuts from our fat piggy to get him.He was the main reason for Everton CL qualification 2 seasons ago.He might just do the trick for us.
