Defoe off to Scousers??

The message boards have gone wild tonight with rumors that Defoe has been given permission to speak to Liverpool and he is likely to complete a deal to the scousers by Friday. Often I take this type of info with a pinch of salt but as it has not only appeared on Glory Glory but very reliable posters have stuck the news up on COYS and FTL as well. Liverpool sites also claim this is now almost a done deal with only the fee in question with some saying 9 million, others 15 million.

If he does go i won't be surprised. Defoe is not known for club loyalty and his last set of performances, when he was supposed to fighting for an England place, showed a distinct lack of commitment to the cause. While clearly a capable player, one who does not want to play for the Lillywhites is not worth keeping as his value should be maximised. While Keane knuckled down and fought for his place, scoring 16 goals for the season, Defoe kept quiet but did not deliver on the pitch. While no one can doubt he is a good player but if he does not want to be here then sell him.

Berbatov is also signing tomorrow, apparently. Could be a busy week.

if defoe leaves, and we choose not to go for mido, we could well see two strikers arriving before the 31st of august..

Defoe is a without a doubt a decent player, but his lack of commitment and self- esteem could well see him of to the scousers.

Im sure Big MJ will make the right decisions come the end of the week.

Defoe was with The England squard.
His agent is elsewhere doing business for one of his other clients.

Defoe stays!
Mido goes!

1 LM In

Bring in:

Berbatov - 11m

Chimbonda - 4.5m

Bridge - 5m

downing - 8m / sneijder - 5m / van der vaart - 12m (any 1 of these would suit me)

And if Defoe does end up leaving i'd say bring in either martins from Inter or Darren Bent.

We should easily afford that lot with the new sponsorship deal, TV revenue for next season, Gate Recipents from this season, season tickets for next season and have about 15-20m spare which i would then use to buy a 4th striker (if mido doesn't sign) and another decent winger (1 out of the 3 i said above).

what a ficklebunch we are!!

I remember everybody saying we should dump keane as Defoe was on fire, the future blah blah blah only a few months ago!!

We should show him a little more loyalty, he was a cracking player for us and will be once again.
If he goes to liverpool, he will blossom into a deadly goal machine and our decision to sell will come back and bite use in the arse!!

He's still young and probably feeling the disappointment of not going to world cup. No reason to give up on him tho!!!

no way should we let defoe go, he doesn't want to go according to recent reports. with berbatov hopefully signing this week, we are looking strong up front. i don't know how far off peckhart will be since he is only 16, but then i never expected to see Lennon so early. bye bye mido, it was good while it lasted, but you haven't got what it takes to succeed when it matters, grow up son.

I for one would be sad to see Defoe leave as on form he is exactly what this club needs, young, hungry, quick, skilful British talent.

However, if he WANTS to leave then, I agree that no one should try and keep a player who is not happy, so just get the biggest fee we can for him now, there is plenty of talent both here or abroad to replace him if he really wants to go. If he does we we'll need Berbatov, Keane and another 2 proven strikers, as looks like Mido is out too.

Vinny.

11 million plus John Arne Riise. Seeing as we're in dreamland, you can have Steven Gerrard as well.

4:35 AM, May 17, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

actually anon 4:35am is right. $11mm + Riise is a joke. Bottom line is we'll be lucky to get $8-10mm. I'm with everyone on the Defoe front though. I want to keep him unless he wants to go. A left sided mid-field player is a far bigger need than striker once Berbatov comes in. Downing, Van Der Vaart, Duff all would be excellent players. Lennon is no where near as effective on the left as right. No way to SWP.

We should sell Defoe ONLY if he wants to leave. I think for fans to want him shipped out because of loss of form/confidence is plain silly. We have seen him strikes against boro and that just shows he is class.

MJ should stick to the grand plan of having covers for every position. While Defoe and Keane would be a fighting for a "small" spot upfront, the "big" spot would be left for Berbatov(if rumours proven true) and Mido to fight for. If Mido is not staying, it would mean Barnard vs Berbatov. However, I still fancy a dutch boy in the form of RvN or DKuyt to come in.

Remember we have European fixtures next season. We definitely need covers for every position for the 4 competitions we would be vying for. Even Chelsea is still signing Ballack and a couple more to cover their already overloaded star laden team.

Our midfield could be improved with SWP or Marlbranque from Fulham as Davids ponder his retirement next season and becomes MJ's(another dutch) assistant/motivational coach. So our midfield would be Tainio, Reid(sell if still fat), Lennnon, Jenas, Davids(used as super sub), Carrick(our stevie gerrard), Danny Murphy(ship his bald ass out if still not contributing like last season), Marlbranque and SWP. Not forgetting Huddlestone and Ziegler who is still yet given enough chance to prove his worth

While our right back Kelly is rumoured to be leaving, Chimbonda would be an excellent replacement with Staltieri as a cover.

The left back Lee would need a cover as well and I suspect wayne bridge is best for now.

Our center backs are more than adequate with just enough cover for the 2 positions namely Gardner, King, Dawson and Davenport. None of them seem injury prone which is good news for the WHL fans.

Our Robbo of cos makes up for the number 1 shirt. The back up keepers must wait as he is doing too darn well for now.

So me say sell Reid, Mido, Murphy. Bring in Berbatov, Kuyt, Marlbranque and SWP.

we need two world class full backs.

Agreed that we shouldnt have major changes to the squad. However, Mido is deemed to fat from what we can observe. It is obvious that he and Reid have been hanging out in McDonalds far too often.

I think Mido wont be sorely missed if he should go back to Roma. Our last games without him went well. And with Berbatov coming in(if rumours turn out right), it's only right that we ship him out as Mido can turn whiny if he doesn't get to play.

Remember the African Nations final? How he yell at his own coach when he was subbed. That's not a teamplayer. That's a spoilt brat.

We need a 4th striker who is just developing and willing to be on the bench. So that means RvN and DKuyt are unlikely targets. We do however have promising reserves like Barnard and that 16 year old Walcott beater by the name of Dixon.

Maybe if we let Mido go and bring in just Berbatov, we can let these 2 youngsters the chance to prove themselves as supersubs.

Huddlestone and Ziegler must also be given more games to assess their worth. I fancy these 2 to make it big at WHL.

In an ideal world anyone with any sense would not want Defoe to go as he is a great player , as above only let him leave if he wants to , after securing berbatov our priority must be a natural left sided winger and a right back "chimbonda please" we have poential world class strikers maturing in Dixon , Barnard , and some Czech wonder kid whos been compared to Jan koller , so if Defoe does go we still have plenty of compition but it would still be to our benifit to keep him .

LMAO @ the spack that made the post about "everyone said we should dumb keane for defoe because he is on fire".....

thats right he WAS on fire, then took his first team slot for granted, got lazy and fucked up good. so lost his place to keane who show the world he is top daddy.

MJ is playing by form, not by friendship or big name media whores.
No one at spurs had even heard of Berbatov before he was linked to us. yet we all know how good he is now.
he wanted Mido to stay when his attitute was good and his play on the pitch was good. then mido changed like defoe, and had a attitute problem, so we are not wanting him now. rightly so.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. Defoe is one of the best strikers we have had at the lane for a long time, and none of the potential replacements mantioned (Bellamy, Bent) have his quality. As soon as he hits form again, we will regret letting him go big time

To lose Defoe is a bick kick in the bollox if true. He's had one poor season where ghe hasnt played much, but the fella is a goal machine, something we have lacked since Lineker. There has been so much neghaticve talk about him recently, most of it regarding his attitude, yet everything tnhat has come out the fellas moutyh has been nothig but positive, especially about the cklub and Jol, yet this "hes attitude stinks" comment still arrises. Personally i thnk the media are to blame for this whol deroe will go shiit, if it was necver mentioned in the first place it wouldnt of escalated. If Defoe goes, it will come back and haunt us.

It makes me laugh how people say that Defoe has been 'lazy' and has a 'bad attitude', same goes for Mido - where do they get these opinions come from? I challenge any one to provide evidense of this supposed 'bad attitude'!!

Someone said JD lost his place because of this - NO!!! He lost it because he wasnt putting the ball in the net and Robbie Keane was coming on as Sub and doing just that.

I have it on pretty strong authority, indirectly from someone who knows a director at the club, that Defoe himself wants to stay at Tottenham, but that the club are willing to sell him, provided they get the right price.

This is because the club reckon that they now have enough capital available to buy an even better striker than Defoe. Who, I have no idea - I assume this was not a reference to Berbatov.

Delighted to see Berbatov sign (subject to a work permit). Just seen him on Sky Sports News speaking about the move, he is just the sort of player we need, just look at his scoring record, he's definately a player that excites me and should excite everyone involved with the club.

Now all we need is 2 consistent full-backs and a world class left winger/backup and possibly a backup striker.

Imagine this starting line-up next season:

Chimbonda Dawson King Bridge

Lennon Jenas/Tainio Carrick Downing

Berbatov Keane/Defoe

Champions League anyone!?

However i do think although we still have 5 or 6 decent central midfielders, i can't help thinking only carrick is world class out of them all. I'd like to see this kallstrom or Van Der Vaart from Hamburg (although he'd cost 15m+) he is capable of turning any game in our favour.

Exciting summer ahead not just regarding the World Cup!

We have signed a new striker and all the attention seems to be on whether Defoe is on his way out?

Throw this in then...

In Berbatovs unveiling Sky mentioned that he will be wearing No18 next season ?!!

Do sky know something we don't?
or have Spurs 'changed' & already chosen next season shirts numbers?
Strange

Read into that what you like ? but i am suprised Berbatov isn't getting the No 9 shirt, as it has been vacated by Rasiak, not Defoes shirt.

Got a feeling Defoe is already gone, and esp as he might miss out on the World Cup. What a shame that would be as we all know what he is capable of.

I'd rather we get rid of Mido and maybe try and sign another 'big' man to join Berbatov in complimenting Keano & Defoe

Let's just hope Defoe is getting the No 9 then!

If we let Defoe go, it will be a massive loss.

He is young, he is English & only a short while ago he was shit hot.

So what, his form has dipped, all strikers go through this, look at Robbie a few months back.

We've bucked the trend of the premiership by having mainly English players & it has paid off, lets buck the trend again by showing loyalty to players.

Loved watching Henry sulking about how hard it was to play up front on his own with just 10 men and the referee against them!!!

How did he miss late in the second half when one on one with the Barca keeper? - He was so tired at the end and had nothing left in his legs!
I can't help thinking about his comments that he had no sympathy for us having to play with 7 ill players on the last day! Touche Monsieur Henry!!!

... and I wonder which dressing room he went back to!!!!

Why all the panic about Defoe leaving? It would leave us one 'short' striker short so it's unlikely, and even if we sold him we'd obviously spend the dosh on someone pretty classy to replace him. For that matter why not keep Mido? Two short & two tall frontmen. Cover for both positions, doesn't that make sense? Can't wait to see who the left winger will be.

Great CL result tonight. So funny to see the aloof arrogance - which 'enry has obviously picked up from his manager - at full throttle. It only highlights the dignity Jol and Carrick showed during their difficult times.

Our season's finished yet keeps improving. Funny old game.

I can't see oursleves disposing the likes of Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool for the CL places.

We can overtake Arsenal if Henry leaves.

The biggest comfort for us is not the thought of the gunners losing. It will be Henry leaving..

We don't have to look back on what could have been. Its time to look forward and ensure we have a sqaud to challenge for the top 4.I'm not so excited by the fact that we are in Europe than the fact we can challenge for the CL positions.

Arsenal without Henry is not much different in quality from the squad we have. But I think their squad have more pace particulary the forwards.

There is no point discussing about Chelsea and Man U , we need a few more seasons to even talk about challenging them.

Liverpool is another realistic target. But I think Benitez has done a great job over there even more so than Martin Jol.Hope we have a talisman like Gerrard.Would Carrick please stand up...

Most think that Chimbonda is the perfect replacement for Salteri but I think we have to be cautious here.

He came from a team more reknown for dare than solidity at the back. Those of you who have watch Wigan last game against arsenal would have note that Chimbonda was sent to the cleaners by the pace of Reyes.I think Salteri has more pace than Chimbonda

He was in the PFA team b'cos of his attacking play, which is better than Salteri.

Another Frenchman with a atitude so we should level our enthusiasm.

RATTLED ? NO

SCARED ? NEVER

JUST CALM AND CONFIDENT.

EXHILARATED BY OUR EFFORTS THIS SEASON WITH A WHOLE NEW BUNCH OF KIDS .
EXCITED BY THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD PLAYING FOR US.

DELIGHTED THAT THE BEST AND SHREWDEST MANAGER IN THE WORLD WILL SEE US THRU THE NEW ERA IN OUR MAGNIFICENT NEW STADIUM.

EXCITED THAT THE INCOME GENERATED WILL SIGNIFICANTLY STRENGTHEN OUR POWER IN THE TRANSFER MARKET.

THRILLED THAT OUR BURGEONING GROUP OF WORLD CLASS YOUNGSTERS WILL MATURE INTO A WONDERFUL NEW TEAM.

AND DELIGHTED THAT IT IS ALL HAPPENING AT A TIME WHEN YOU LOT ARE WAKING UP FROM 20 YEARS OF FAILURE AND MISERY.

YES I AM PLEASED THAT YOU AT LAST HAVE A DECENT MANAGER AND SOME GOOD PLAYERS.

BECAUSE WE WANT YOU TO BE OUR MAIN RIVALS.

THEN OUR DOMINATION WILL MEAN SO MUCH MORE.

BE AFRAID OF THE NEW ERA.

THE ARSENAL ERA HAS NOT ENDED.

IT IS ABOUT TO ENTER THE MOST EXCITING TIME OF ALL.

AND YES BELIEVE IT....

No one is denying that you gonners are good.Your future look bright with a brand new stadium, you have a great crop of youngsters, you have a top player and a top manager.

But we are emerging from the doldrums. We have a top chairman , we have climbed 10 places up the league table for the past 2 season and we have a REAL english team.

We now have class and personality at WHL and we will be challenging you.

We will do something about the stadium, we will continue to improve our squad and take us lightly at your own peril....we are after your CL spot next season; with or without Henry for you....

Sorry spurs

he IS staying but take consolation from the fact that the best in the world is staying at THE best club in the world for at least 4 MORE YEARS.

Most prem club fans are delighted because they like to watch world class players in great teams playing at their grounds.

Only you lot are gutted cos he is with Arsenal.

So get used to it and next time we come to your place give him some real stick .

Be afraid when he is in the mood.

Be ready to shit yourselves when he doesnt like you.

And KING ENRY fuckin hates you !!

He's the best player in the world and already one of the all time greats." - Ruud Van Nistelrooy

"The last player you want the ball to go to is the best player on the planet." - Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after his backpass to Henry gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory at Highbury.

"I've seen everything in this league for the past 25 years. I've never seen anything like him. I said he was special, but he's irreplacable." - Andy Gray
"
He's a wizard with his feet and is blessed with a gift for scoring goals. His best quality is his speed while the ball is at his feet. He may be the fastest man ever to lace up a football boot. No defender in the world can keep up with him." - Lilian Thuram

"I tell my kids in the Academy at Newcastle to watch Henry. He plays with such a swagger, not an arrogance, and that is a great quality. He always looks so comfortable. You talk about cars going from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds, and he is like that. He just explodes. I could sit there for hours and watch him." - Peter Beardsley

"If you look at the whole package, with everything Henry has, I don't think you can find that anywhere else. You give him the ball in the right place and his acceleration will take him past any defender in the world." - Dennis Bergkamp

"When I was at Spain I thought Zinedine Zidane was the best in the world, but playing alongside Thierry made me realise that I was playing alongside the best footballer in the planet." - Jose Antonio Reyes

"Ronaldinho is a special player, but Thierry Henry is probably technically the most gifted footballer ever to play the beautiful game." - Zinedine Zidane

"When he's on fire, he is impossible to stop. He dribbles like a winger, but is still able to score 20 goals a year in the Premiership." - Fabio Capello

"Sometimes when I see the speed Henry moves on the pitch he looks like he's bought a motorbike. If I have to mark him on Wednesday, I will just have to get myself one as well." - Alessio Tacchinardi

"Germany are light years away from having a player like him." - Franz Beckenbauer

"Henry is a beautiful player and has got complete technique, I adore watching him. I respect him very much as a man and as a footballer. He reminds me of myself . - Ronaldinho

"... then there is the magnificent Thierry Henry - someone who has blistering pace and is unbelievable when he is finishing at his best." - Alan Hansen

wasnt it lovely seeing the scum expect to win as per usual, then see it taken away from them for a change. ha ha ha

'we were unlucky' they say - really! if lehman didnt go for that blatant foul and the goal was given, then that cheating ebobo shoudve gone for a 2nd yellow for diving. prob learnt to dive off pires and reyes the cheating cunts that they are. and what a suprise that they go and score from their cheating.

henry is a good player but the frog bottled it on wed didnt he, when you lost. we aint frightened cos we got ledley at the back!

same the parade was called off - i was pissing myself and so was the rest of london

Wow! It seems arsenal have decided to sign a new contract with terry 'I'm god's gift' 'enry. Excelent. I'd hate them to have any sort of excuse next season. Spurs are growing by the minute. Hope arse can keep up over the next few years.

Re: 12.34am

Scary that you've re signed a 29 year old who has probably just peaked and fuck up two chances to win you the CL?
Fraid not.

Try again coz nothing about woolwich scares me. We've turned a corner big time and this season was a just the start.
