Carlton cole to sign.

The lads at FTL and COYS have done it again with more great info. Carlton Cole is now a Spurs player according to top source "Naybet". It was thought it would be announced today but it now appears that Spurs will announce the capture over the weekend or on Monday.

How this relates to Jermaine Defoe is anyones guess. It has gone all quiet on this front as it was thought Liverpool were going to wrap up his signature by today. However, there appears to be nothing going on here at the moment with Defoe apparently wanting to stay at WHL but Spurs are ready to listen to offers. I think that if he is still a Spurs player by the time the World Cup starts then he will be a Spurs player at the start of the season.

Cole could be a good bit of business by Spurs as long as the fee is low. Jol rates him highly but he does not have a fantastic strike rate. However if you look at how Jol has brought on players like Carrick and Lennon then he will hopefully be able to get the best from Cole. He will be fourth choice at the club behind Berbatov, Keane and Defoe. If confirmed by the club, I expect Mido will be leaving when his loan period expires next month.

i was hoping this deal would come off- personally, i think this is a perfect 4th choice striker, leaving us with 2 short and 2 tall forwards....

That is good news perfect 4th choice young and english but we need 2 decent full backs more than anything... And please say there not going to sell Huddlestone or defoe.

interesting, but i'd also like to see Barnard and El Hamdaoui given more time in the team as backup for the established strikers. Barnard has proved his worth in the reserves and having seen El Hamdaoui in pre-season last year, neither of them should be discounted. They may not make PL standard but (like Rasiak) we will never know unless we give them a go.

Not that bad signing cole, but i think darren bent would be better or even mido. Also we need to stop spurs from selling defoe he is class one bad season, he is still only 23 for god sake. We need to keep our best players and he certainly is one. Fingers crossed we don't sell him, Jol has always spoke highly of him so i can't see him wanting to sell.

We are looking to sign cole as a 4th striker. darren bent would not want to be 4th choice and he would be too expensive for only one good season. I hope defoe stays, he is our best proven finisher. Fullbacks are a priority

Agree with Anon: 5.44 we would need much better than cole as a "relacement" for Defoe. Hope he Jermaine stays, have faith in him.

Cole ok for 4th striker though, but must be willing for limited bench duty. Thought I heard somewhere that he wasn't prepared to do that?...however he is well out of favour at Chelsea and so Abramovich would have told him to accept this offer he couldn't refuse.

Agree. All the noise out of WHL is that Defoe will stay. If you look at every newsnow.co.uk article that talks about Defoe leaving - it's from Liverpool suppoerters trying to rile Defoe into leaving. He's got a 4 year contract with us. He's confirmed he wants to stay (only 8 weeks ago). He's young. He's British. He's still scored a decent amount of goals this season and was one of our stars when we remained unbeaten from Aug to Dec.

Don't believe the hype. We'll have our front line confirmed and I agree, Cole would be an ideal 4th striker, but there's also room for Barnie to knock on Defoe's door, and El Hammy to know on Berbatov's. As for Perkhart and our new Irish Rooney - well that's gonna be interesting in a couple of seasons time.

Mr Jol - 1 left winger. 2 full backs. No Murphy. 2 rising stars needed too for left wing, and attacking midfield.

I think you guys are a little bit misinformed, Berbetov is not a target man although he scores lots of goals he is more like a Sheringham type player playing off a striker which means he will rotate with Keane. The Defoe deal was last Christmas he is off to Liverpool. Lee will play at right back next season if we can sign Wayne Bridge. Ignore the Wright Philips links Ian will not be seen in the WHL stands. Huddlestone is making noises for a move, Davids is going back to Ajax along with Stam. We will be signing Jay Jay Okocha on a free. Carlton Cole will be a back up to a new target man Kuyt has gone quiet, maybe Maxi Lopez would be a good buy.

Christiano Lucarelli anyone. Ok he's just about to turn 30, but has been a proven goalscorer for years and is powerful too. He's frustrated at missing out on the world cup, looking to leave Livorno, at 2 or 3 million would have been a great addition as our 4th striker and as a 2 or 3 year measure to help get us in the Champs league.

But I love Martin anyway!...can see what hes doing sticking to young british players with potential...just hope cole is not a dud. Although for a couple of million is low risk. But our short-term ojective is the Champs league, for which we need proven goalscorers.

To be honest im not to bothered about Cole. Im not knocking him at all, hes a a very good player but I think we should aim higher. Our first strike partnership next season is total quality. Keane and Berbatov, it will be special. Both these players have terrorised defences in their respective domestic leagues for a number of years now and between them they have over 50 international goals which speaks for itself.not many teams in the world and PL league can better that. We should concentrate on keeping Defoe and Mido as both these players are class and settled. People have started slating Mido which is out of line. His tantrum in the African cup and subsequent ban messed his head up for a while and in turn he lost his form. This can be tackled by the management as his ability is not in question, the only question I would have is about his wage demands he should lower them but dont forget Romas asking price this is a factor aswell. Defoe should not be sold end of story. He needs to show the same hunger keano did and fight for his right to wear the shirt same as any player should. You reap what you sow as they say so he knows what he has to do. All in all things are looking so good its hard to believe it in a way so long may it continue. Next season really will be something and when we click completely god help the rest of them. The so called bigger clubs can laugh and joke about us all they want but deep down they know were back and rightly so. BMJ na the boys are in complete control and know exactly what they are doing we have nothing to worry about what so ever about what players will be arriving the right ones will. In Jol we trust.

If CCole is a spurs player then greta, as already mentioned he is an ideal 4 th choice who will get chances due to Spurs being involved in 4 competitions.

I have seen Cole play for the U21's and he looks good, strong, direct and quite pacey for a big guy. Looking forward to next season already, just looking for RB and good Left winger. COYS

Cole would possibly the worst signing in the clubs history. You all say he is fine for a 4th choice striker but what happens if we get injuries? Where are the goals going to come from? We need a 4th choice striker that will at least bang in a few.

I really can not work out why we are after him.

I have spoken with Chelsea and Villa fans and they have all said he is nowhere near the standard Spurs need.

Agree that a more ideal fix would be for Defoe and Mido who is also still young to both stay. We have already a successful nucleus, so why change it too much?, one class addition in Berbatov is ideal.

However, Does not look like happenin, as behind the scenes something went wrong. And then Mido, would have to settle for 4th striker, and because you can only name 4 subs on the bench in the prem(I think correct if Im wrong), might not even make that sometimes as you rarely name 2 out and out strikers on the bench, as you need res goalkeeper and Defence and Midfield backup also. So if he is not even on the bench sometimes cannot see that going well, as Defoe will demand at least bench duty.

That is the difficult challenge for MJ to manage, a good 4th striker, but also a patient one...difficult combination!

OK- first things first- I would LOVE to see Reto back at the lane, itching to prove his worth and make himself a left wing candidate- and if he trains well over the summer- maybe he could put on that extra yard of pace he needs.

Second- we may need a fourth strikjer- but what about that young boy we're signing whose supposed to be the next Rooney? Where does he fit in?

For me priority buy has got to be a new centre back- especially for European competion, which will inevitably take it's toll on our players fitness and possibly injuries, and with Gardener proven to be sketchy at vital moments (like Stalteri who is only good for 84 minutes of a game), we've got to be built on a good rock to go further up (league and Europe).

Cole not a bad shout- and if he can be content with the bench/ odd rotational than that's good, and very shrewd business.

We're all going on a European Tour, let's hope it ends in Scotland!

I saw cole a lot of times when he was at Villa on loan. He played a lot of games, and hardly scored. i know service to him was poor, but still, he just doesn't fill me with confidence if he had to come off the bench for us to nick a goal next season. Or even worse, if we got a few injuries and he had to play a lot. I like to always give players a chance, but all I am saying is that I am not all that thrilled if we sign him. I would love him to prove me wrong though. Is just my opinion

Guys Ive got it!, how about this scenario:

Lets say we do buy Cole as our 4th striker for now, but bare in mind used very occasionally as no chance of oosting 3 top class strikers for our important Prem and Uefa games.

We wait till after the world cup, and learn that Kuyt is now willing to sign. Lets say that he originally did prefer champs league football, But due to Henry now staying(boo!)Arsescum dont need Kuyt anymore/cant afford him due to new Henry and Ashley Cole wages, so Kuyt now opts to join us thinking he can help us get in the Champs league and impressed with the berbatov signing, it shows ambition plus the Jol Dutch connection, and doesn't want to go North, wants to be based in London.

We now have to sell Defoe, but in Kuyt have a second world class signing, who we only had to pay an extra 2 million because we sold Defoe for 10 million.

We now have the following stikers:
Kuyt
Berbatov
Keane
(all proven goalscorers and arguably all world class)all 3 capable of fighting for 1st and 2nd choice striker spots.Whichever of these 3 on the subs bench also capable of changing a game.

Carlton Cole - 4th choice, use only in Injury crisis plus domestic cups. Keep him for 1 or 2 seasons until Pekhart and Terry Dixon ready for top flight football, and then flog him if not progressing and unhappy.

So this scenario would mean Kuyt joining, but Defoe leaving and Henry staying at the scum.

Which would we as a Spurs supporters prefer???...strangely enough, I reckon most people would prefer Henry leaving..hahaha!...as this would more seriously affect the scum more than Kuyt joining us.

I do agree with one thing though, unless we can replace Defoe only with someone like Kuyt, I would never dare sell him, remember the replacement for Kanoute - Rasiak!!!

Lets not forget that Ruud VN is also available shortly, and with "Henry I am not a woman" staying at the scum, we should now try for Dirk Kuyt too.

If Defoe is going to Newcastle as many reports would have you believe, maybe we (and they) will be looking for a swap deal with Owen, as Defoe and Owen are both too short to play together and won't work as a partnership in the premiership. Personally I wouldn't be unhappy with that swap.

4:32 AM, May 20, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I cannot understand why Newcastle would straight swap Michael Owen who cost them 16 million just one year ago, and scored them goals too, despite his recent injury problem. Is still young and Englands no1 striker. IMO you would have thought the geordies would demand at least Defoe + 6 million for Owen, but then why would they want to swap a proven goalscorer for a player who is struggling for goals, dont make sense at all. Reckon they want Defoe to partner Owen for some reason or simply give back up to Owen?.

At the same time I cannot understand the rumours aout swapping Defoe for Kewell, please lord NO, why would we want a player who is injury prone and shows 1 or 2 bits of magic a season and dissapears...would rather have Cisse, and even then would prefer not at all.

The only swap I would like is Defoe for Ruud Van Nistelrooy...a proven goalscorer.

I cant believe you fuckers have even watched a game at the lane!

A fucking mideless pratt can see Defoe is a lazy bastard and not the fucking wonder kid you keep on about! He was fucking useless, our best games were when he sat on the bench and when he did get the chance of a game he put is a shit effort that cost him an england spot.......

Sell him to somebody else for a good sum and get someone who is useful....Cole is not the answer to anything and I think Levy made a better deal with chelscum than taking there cast offs! We are still to see just what compensation deal Mr Levy sorted out.....prob wont know until after the world cup.

Carlton Cole - fuck off. He is NOT the answer. We have got to be aiming higher than that! We have enough talent in the youth coming thru, we need established top strikers NOW to get into CL!

On the defoe debate - I wouldnt be sorry to see defoe go. he had ample chance last year to prove his worth, especially last 6 games of the season. apart from a couple of flashes, his overall contribution came across as a lazy bastard in his own shell. that is what sven has seen and that is why he wasnt picked for england squad.

remember him against the arse and manure - he was more or less anonymous. NO EFFORT AT ALL FOR A MAN FIGHTING FOR HIS PLACE. those were the big games to shine where a top strikers contribution would have made the difference, and i am sorry but he didnt, he walked around quite a lot looking sorry for himself. their two best strikers contributed - rooney and henry, and that was the difference. if you wanna win things you have gotta have big game strikers who contribute with effort, commitment and goals when it matters.

sorry, BUT Defoe to go - loves himself too much, and thinks he is bigger than the club.

Would rather see someone else with the potential and Barney trying his heart out and given the chance Defoe has been given whilst we search for him.

Wake up guys - if you want success, like we did last season we need to get rid of the stepping stone players this season.

As we've done our fair share now for England, suppose we can now sign one or two more foreigners...lol.

A great start would be cash plus swap deal for Danny Murphy for Chimbonda. Its rumoured they want him to replace Jimmy Bullard. I know he hasn't played much, but dont think he adds anything extra too us. Chimbonda would. Plus give Huddlestone a chance this season. We have got to play him, he is a big talent who we should not lose.

Thank Christ for the response by F E to my "Where is Barney" query.

At last we have an intelligent, intellectual, cerebral, and most articulate response to an extremely important concern to we spurs fans.

Reading anything of any real interest on this Blog is rare and therefore most welcome.

Perhaps F E can now remind us of the whereabouts of THIERRY HENRY ?

Truth About Thierry!
How can Henry's so called loyalty be championed? What totally ridiculous sentiments written from relief rather than common sense. Arsenal fans have been absolutely mugged off by Henry, there really isn't a more succinct way of expressing it.

He refused for MONTHS to commit. He was 'making his mind up', he was 'waiting for his nails to dry' he was doing anything other than pledge his damn signature to a contract which would have more clout in the boardrooms of the financiers of the company he is employed by almost so than on the pitch and he wouldn't sign. In fact he got his knickers in a twist when he was asked! 'Oh, deary hark at her!' Ought to have been the cry from the press, but they too indulged him.

What did he do after the Wigan game? On the Day of Days at Highbury, when everything gooner shaped and orientated was celebrated? He kissed the bloody pitch. Well thankyou baby Jesus and the orphans for a sign! Hallelujah! We're saved! 'He IS the Messiah - I should know, - I've followed a few'...

No. Not a word. 'Anything for the teary eyed kids at home clutching their scarves, Thierry?' ' Theees ess a wundarfool day fuur Eyesnol, arrnd Aam gluurd eet dadurn't ruern'

What a ****.

However - it came as zero surprise to me that this naive, child at heart, can't we all just kick a ball together and make the world a better place guy was DEVASTATED by the way Barca dealt with him personally on the field. They pushed and kicked and barely looked him in the eye as they bullied him off the ball - again and again.

Whoa! Are you not my friends too? Are we not shooting a Nike advert here? Is the world not just one great big onion? No, this is war, not a glee club. He stayed because he heard your cheers and he felt your pride. To quote Catherine Tate's granny, ' Whaad a loadda of old SHIT!'

He's staying because he discovered the hard way that that not everyone is a honourable as he try's to be, and that Arsenal are more honourable than Barca. He feels he's had a narrow escape. But don't kid yourself you were first choice. That is all

While we shouldn't be talking too much about arsenal, this is my take on the Henry "change of heart".

It's a matter of ego.He wanted to go off like a hero in Paris. But he didn't.So in the moment of frustration, he started blaming the referee and bad mouthing the very player that tried to persuade him to join Barca;Ronaldino. At the back of his mind, it was a stage for him to prove that he is better than Ronaldino.

After bad mouthing the best Barca players; Ronaldino and E'to, he knew it would be unwise to go to Nou Camp anymore. So he was left with only one option i.e. that is to carry on at Arsenal.

What a arrogant jerk.We love to give him more of the Paris experience when he visit WHL.

Personally am all for that Murphy-Chimbonda swap deal, although I think that 2million plus Murphy was more of a fair price, seems that his call up to the world cup squad for France has already added 1 million to his value, but still could go up more if he has a good participation.

I just dont think Murphy adds anything extra to our midfield, even though, people are gonna say that he is untried...he has had his best days IMO, a Wigan move for him would be Ideal, move back north, regular team spot, less expectation. Ghaly not playing too me tells me something is not right with him. Even Andy Reid got a game at the end of the season.

(As well as a left winger)I would like us to add one more young combatative midfield in the Davids mold as his replacement, but needs to be quality - Didier Zokora?

WE MUST ALSO BRING HUDDLESTONE INTO THE FREY THIS SEASON, CANNOT LOSE A YOUNG PLAYER LIKE THAT, GREAT POTENTIAL AND FUTURE AND COULD SERVE AS A SECOND DEPUTY FOR CENTRAL DEFENCE AFTER DAVENPORT OR GARDNER, AS WELL AS MIDFIELD WHEN NEEDED.

Rumours tody are suggesting that Dirk Kuyt said he would be happy with a move to Newcastle now, as he wants to play in the prem. Surely he would be even happier to join us as one of our main 3 strikers which would mean Defoe going. I for one rate Defoe, but we need to go all out to catch up with the scum this season.

SO QUESTION FOR YOU:
Do we A) gamble on Defoe fulfilling his potential again?

or B) Buy Kuyt who is potentially world class for little more money than the fee we would sell Defoe for?

So our strikers would be:
Berbatov, Kuyt, Keane?

Or stay as Berbatov, Keane, Defoe?

AND C.Cole as 4th striker just used as back up and in FA and Carling Cups.

If we want to compete with the big boys we should buy Kyte and have four Quality stikers not Three.

We have bigman Littleman pairings which can be rotated, so players get games and get rested without anyworry of quality

Defoe-Kyte

Keane-Berbatov

Just like when Manu won the treble
with Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Skoljskar.

When we have a squad which can be rotated without any hesitation or without a lack of confidence in a players ability, that is when we will be up there at the top.

We need cover for King and Dawson if either of those two get injured then we are weak.

8:54 PM, May 23, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 8.54, yeah of course it is more ideal to have Defoe in addition to Berbatov, Kuyt and Keane. Problem is:

1) Means we have to shell out an additional 10-12 million for Kuyt with no one to trade him in against. But if we could get 8-10 million for Defoe, would only cost us 2-4 million extra for Kuyt. Remember we need to shell out on other positions too.

2)Defoe could then well find himself 4th in pecking order and sometimes not even on the bench for important games, he would definately piss off after that. Where as Carlton Cole getting next to no football at the moment would be a little happier with a few prem appearances as sub, plus all FA and Carling games.

IMO it has to be Berb, Keane, Kuyt OR Defoe, Cole.

If I was MJ would try get Kuyt first and then sell Defoe only if successfull, bit surprised no one been in for him yet, a good world cup will change that though.

Cant believe people are saying that the Cole signing will cause Defoe to leave, as Cole is hardly a good replacement for Defoe!...Defoe should only go if we sign another big name...Kuyt? Huntlaar? It's gone quiet on the left-winger front though hasn't it. Would Like to think that Reid could improve, but just cant see him ever becoming the kind of defender skinning left winger we need to be a top 4 side. At best he is good back up, if he wants to be only that. Now lets see our options here:

SWP? - would cost 10 million+, maybe a lot more, if Chelski let him go that is. Dunno if Levy will splash that, as we need money for other positions too. Def a good player though. Would mean Lennon on the left and SWP on the right. Cant understand why we keep playing right footed players on the left! That would mean we would definately need a solid "real" left back to back lennon up though, so Lee Young out if so. Apparently a Bridge bid refused.

Ribery - already said, is not interested unless we are Barca.

Pederson - is he really that good?...think he is overated, does not threaten defences all game for me.

Downing - Good, young potential, but will he be allowed to leave, maybe now McClaren's gone? and is he that good?

Schneider - heard no links to him.

Wilmesson - gone quiet on him too.

Ben Arfa - dont know much about him, apparently hasn't played that much, but good potential.

Barry - Not a flying winger is he.

I know, we will know more about the availability of most players after the world cup, any ideas?

As for the downing question, the "buy english" policy has not served us too badly isn't it?

Looking at our season...The english lads other than JD has done well.Even Gardner and Davenport has their moments.

Our biggest performers has been the english contingent; Lennon, Dawson and Robinson.Keane has been the joker in the pack.

Downing is not denilson or Ginola but he deliver a mean cross.Something that has been lacking the whole season.I could hardly remember a proper cross from the byeline that resulted in a HEADED goal.

The service from the wings was only improved after the emergence of Lennon.Even then Lennon deliver a different type of cross.Low and hard across the goal.Downing will give something different to the team.

I like the look of Cutis Davies and he completely shut out Henry last season.Something our defenders cannot claim to have done so.He would compliment Dawson fantastically.Dawson is better in the air while Curtis is more mobile on the ground. We must get the boy and maybe Davenport or Gardner could be used as a bait.

The number of players we are linked to is astonishing. It outline the club ambition to compete at the top.Next season CL is a MUST not the UEFA cup.Lets face it, it's a mickey mouse tournament compare to CL.
On that note, our buying policy is to get players who can help us to compete in the league and NOT europe.
Thats why Barry, Curtis, Chimbonda, Bridge, Bellamy and Downing are all prime targets. This guys may just help us nick off Liverpool,Arsenal and possibly Newcastle for the 4th spot.

8.04am,
After seeing Downing tonite,
maybe Im being cynical but just cant see Stuart Downing as setting White Hart Lane alight. Just because he is English will cost us 7 or 8 million maybe more. At that price would rather get some one who can actually go past players instead of passing square and back too much, even Reid can do that! We shouldn't just buy English for the sake of it, no point in that.

Even though Lennon was frustrated a lot, thought he done well to get a lot of free kicks and a player sent off, as they just couldn't handle his speed, that goes a long way in important games. You see thats what wingers are supposed to do...have the speed and/or skill to go past players, what a great player Lennon is for 1 million!

Vinny,I did not get to see the Belarus friendly but I see your point.

I pointed out Downing is not Ginola earlier so I know what can be expected from him.

Downing is a poor man David Beckham, a left sided midfielder more renown for his crossing. Not a winger per se.

Our best option is any of the 3 chaps from Chelsea; Duff,J Cole or Robben. But they are either ex-orbitant or refuse to come to WHL.

I still think he would be a useful addition rather than a exciting one if he comes to WHL.You can guarantee assist from him and that is worth a few quids already.7.5 mil ? over the top.5~6mil maybe.

Agreed Anon 5.03am, it looks difficult to find a skillful winger these days, and the likes of Lennon are becoming a rare breed. Remember John Barnes for the scousers?...he used to be absolutely amazing in league games and then anonymous for England, so wont judge Downing too much on last night...just thought he looked a bit ordinary and although am all for the buying british policy, thought that 7.5 million is too much just because he is one of the only English wingers in the prem. Middlesborough seem reluctant to sell anyway. Does anyone know much about Wes Schneider of Ajax?...could we use the dutch connection to get him?
