Why we need to worry.

I think we have a problem at Spurs. We played reasonably well against Liverpool and had a glorious chance to take the lead but blew it but that is not the problem. The problem, to me anyway, is Jermaine Defoe.

Defoe is a lethal finisher - we have all seen what he can do for Spurs and West Ham before us. But look at him in recent weeks. He fails to score for quite a few games and was rightly dropped for Keane. Keane took his chance and has been banging the goals in with Mido ever since. OK, Keane missed a sitter against Liverpool but no one can argue he has not been in good form. While Keane was on the bench he also always came on with a good attitude and gave his best.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Defoe. His attitude in recent weeks has been poor and is for all to see in his recent performances. He never involved himself against Leicester and was universally slated by every paper about the game against Liverpool. He cannot be bothered. He hasn't looked at his time on the bench as a chance to rest and then come back and show what he can do. He has sulked - seen Mido and Keane banging in the goals and decided to sod it.

He need to shape up quick or quite frankly be sold. We cannot afford to keep someone with an attitude at the club. If necessary sell him and buy someone who wants to be at Spurs. I hope I'm wrong as he could be one of the best striker's in the world. The question is: Does he want to be?

im starting to agree. keane came into the team so hungry to score and impress and it worked and you're right the same hasnt happened with defoe

however I think togive him a proper chance again he has to start a few games in a row and see how he does when he gets a bit of a run of games going

I think your right about Defoe. Im mean surely he should be worried about all the speculation of new strikers comming to the club in the transfer window, yet he is still not showing any interest! Keane is a prime example of the type of player we need at spurs, he sat on the bench for the best part of a season, waited for his chance and has now secured his first team spot.

I agree with what you say about Defoe. I don't remember him touching the ball against Liverpool. I is certainly not at his best at the moment and is clearly annoyed about not playing much at the moment. I also agree that we played very well against Liverpool. We passed it around brilliantly at times. But my big concern is that we had so much posseion but rarely looked threatening. We do not seem to create much in games which concerns me alot. We only seem to create three or four clear chances in a game. I can't quite put my finger as to why this is. But I do feel we need to have afew more efforts in games in order to try and compete for a place in europe this seoson. Does anyone else agree with this?

So what? If Defoe no longer has anything to offer our club (as has been shown for the last few weeks), then why do we need him? Correct me if I'm wrong, we've done without him and are still 4th in the league and kept Liverpool to a one goal lead, aswell as missing clear-cut chances of our own.

Will he stay or will he go? Quite frankly, who's bothered? I trust our management and directors to know whether he's worth keeping or not, and if he isn't, I trust them to replace him with someone better.

How can any spurs fan want to get rid of Defoe, he is a great striker and will score goals all day long for whatever team he plays for.
All he needs is a few starts to get some confidence back, and if i was him i would be pissed off im on the bench behind Keane, ok he has scored a few goals but Defoe should be the second name on the teamsheet after Robinson every week.
Just hope he gets a start next saturday cos the longer he stays out of the starting 11 the more he will want to leave and you can't let talent like that leve SPURS.

I think the main reason that Defoe has struggled this season is the lack of service. You may all raise your eyebrows at that, but we certainly don't create half as many chances in games as the likes of Man Utd and SCUM! I don't think Jol has found the right balance in the midfirld yet. Ha tries to play too many central players. We need a left winger.

totally agree with 10.39. i've said it before, i'll say it again - jol is not blending the midfield properly. he needs 2 from davids, carrick and jenas then leennon / routledge on the right and reid / ziegler or whoever on the left. if davids is to play, he needs to play in the middle. lee is too exposed sometimes, with edgar drifting inside. should be interesting at right back now as well. salteri banned and maybe kelly will get a decent run ??? as for defoe, he'll come good, just lacking in confidence perhaps - looked sharp when he came on against portsmouth recently.

chances? What chances? How we going to get sexy football for our strikers by playing 6 central midfielders in the same side.
With our 2 fullbacks who are midfielders (one is a right footer-Pingpong playing left back).
JJ playing on right providing width? what width?
Taino on left of midfield? who is he going to skin and get crosses in?
No this team at the moment is not about Defoe. But being hard to beat, about being a unit and creating a team working for each other. THEN when we get it right, will be about sexy football. Jol has a plan. Time will tell.

I've been saying the same for weeks mate. Defoe has the skills to be as good as anyone in the world but skill can only account for a percentage of a player. I can't abide players who don't recognise the fans, especially after away games and Defoe no longer does. Does he think we owe him? if anything he owes us. Fans don't turn up to see him they turn up to see the team and represent the name of Tottenham Hotspur. Defoes arrogance has got the better of him and its time for anouther club to make a mistake and buy him. I hope his attitude improves and I would welcome him back into the team if that was the case. But as it is and somewhat embarrasingly Peter Crouch is a much better asset.

Suggesting we sell Defoe is ridiculous. You put yourself in the same camp as those who were saying Keane was WELCOME to go and play Championship football with Everton or Villa when the back pages were full of speculation.

Defoe is obviously in a slump which I am pretty sure the club are attempting to reverse. I see no evidence of sulking. If anything looks sheepish as any top draw striker might when having gone from being first choice to third.

Lastly, what would you do? Aid his return to form or sell him in decline, ie without making a profit?

Suggestion to sell Defoe is indeed ridiculous while we don't even secure Mido. He is those type of players who can really excite us with his talent. This season is far from satisfaction for him, especially when we recalled that he was the top England scorer last season with 20+ goals under his belt. Cant really believe that people started to dislike him when he is lack of confidence, chance and maybe motivation. We need three of them before we can buy any proven striker.

I completely agree with the concerns of Defoe and all the specualation about stikers coming to spurs.

It is clear to me that anything more than two goals a game is the issue! We struggle to acbeive the spectacular and the consistant.

For me, forget about Defoe, he'll come good at some point whether at spurs or not, Keane is good and is worth his money with Mido.

What is needed is a more consistant striker and flair player in midfield, doing this will only create a more strenghened team for places and in ability.

Fourth for me is somewhat of a shock and I think we have some hard times ahead especially without Mido who is our best striker without a doubt!

Lets be realistic, Europe is our best hope! Jol is under pressure to acheive something now what with the investment and I think Europe is the answer unless we get Cole from Chelsea and someone who is scoring 30 goals a season! Can Jol prize Ruud from united? thats the sort of answer I want!

The club is not in crisis, the club is doing great, it's time to move to the next level!

I love spurs so much, I want to see them and the board achieve something for there faith in Jol!

I think the truth about Defoe is somewhere in the middle.

Leave attitude out of it - since unless any of us are at training or sitting on the bench with him, it is little more than speculation from what you think you see on tv.

On one hand, I believe Defoe is a bit of a goal-hanger. He is a great finisher, but plays almost exclusively as an individual. His team play is clumsy at best and utterly non-existant at worst. Even my wife can see that the guy is not a team player. And won't shut up about it.

On the other hand, Jermaine is a very young player who has always had an edge in pace and the ability to put it in the net. For a scoring talent like him, the team skills are something that are learned with lots of experience - the area where Keane has the clear edge. Sitting him on the bench is not going to lead to an improvement here. Indeed, if his time on the pitch is limited, and the main way he can help the team is scoring, he is even more likely to come out with a single-minded attitude.

Coaching players like Defoe is always a challenge. They are great Talents, and have been told how great they are their entire lives. You can't expect Defoe to suddenly develop a lifetime of team-blending skills overnight. Experience matters.

As for the rest of the comments, it is not reasonable to blame the team's problems on Defoe's faults. Every player has faults. Carrick could be faster, Lee could be taller, Mido could play more under control, Lennon could develop the patience of a 32 year old winger. People forget that the the issues we associate with "mental" - such as attitude, team play, on-pitch intelligence, etc. - are football skills just like shooting, dribbling, passing, etc. It's tough when you are a guy (like a lot of us fans) that knows he could make the right pass but lacks the pace and athletic talent to play professionally. Be that as it may, Defoe may need to develop some of those other skills to go with the ones he was born with. Easier to teach him how to be a better teammate than teach me (or some League 2 striker) to run as fast as him.

As as for replacing him, and loyalty, and sticking together: We all support Spurs. If we can find a striker better than Defoe (or a defender better than Ledley, or a keeper better than Robbo) then I hope the club goes for it. That's what the pro game is all about. Suggesting that we wouldn't replace Defoe if we could get our hands on Rooney or Ruud or (gasp) Henry, based on loyalty, is absurd.

On the other hand, we can't begin to talk about dumping a player of Defoe's caliber (and potential - he is still young, I repeat repeat repeat) unless we have a big upgrade lined up. They are out there but there aren't many of them. Last time I checked Hernan Crespo was not on the transfer market. And if he was, what would he cost?

And for what it would cost, might we be better off finding a truly outstanding left winger that might feed our talented young goal-hanging forward 10-15 more goals per season?

Persepctive, people, perspective.

Sell Defoe, are you mad?

On his day HE IS the best Striker at Spurs, have you all forgot about last season. Yes he seems to sometimes come across as arrogant and disheartened but we must keep him if we are to move on a level.

What next, sell Ledley & Robbo?

Questions marks must be asked about Jol's ablility (or lack of)to get Keane & Defoe playing well together. (or just playing together)

I for one think that Jol's obsession with BIG man and LITTLE man needs to be addressed.

Don't say it doesn't or can't work because thats bull. And don't say we need a big man for the crosses we put in cos we don't put in crosses, we don't even play our wingers. The only reason we need a big man is because we tend to hoof the ball, or Robbo tends to hoof the ball upfield towards Mido.

Look at Le'Arse, they never put in crosses or score with their heads but they manage. Brazil had Romario & Bebeto and both were midgets and they played fantastic together. Ok Defoe & Keane are not in their class (yet) but to write them off and HAVE TO play that useless beanpole instead shows that Jol still has A LOT to learn IMO. I would rather play 2 youngsters from the reserves then play Rasiak, he's shyte.

It will be interesting to see what Jol does now Mido is absent but PLEASE GOD, let us see Keane & Defoe together on the pitch playing one-two's and terrorising defences and Barnard on the bench instead of, Rasiak up front paired with whoever, because we got more chance of winning with 10 men than that Championship plank.

And why do we always play 4 central midfielders instead of starting with our wingers or at least either Lennon or Routledge?

And WTF has Stephen Kelly done wrong? Yes he had a bad game v Leicester but who didn't? That's just rust, remember how well he done last season.

The doubts are starting to creep in.....but......

I Love Martin Joooool......
.....Martin Jol luvvvvvs me

COYS!

Hopefully by the end of the season i will be proved wrong due to Jol's (tactical) and effective man management skills and it is all just part of the master plan (minus Rasiak of course)

I too, hope to see Barnard involved in the squad soone rather than later but to suggest he come in the team short term to REPLACE either Keane or Defoe is absolute nonsense. I can't believe some people.

I agree with most comments except selling Defoe as he has the potential to be great with Spurs, he clearly needs to be playing regularly but respect that the team must come first.

For me our problem lies in midfield (even with so many in the squad) particularly on the left. A creative left winger is required urgently. As mentioned before play 2 CM's and 2 wingers and then lets try to play the ball through to the front yes the long ball upto Mido from Robbo has worked but we need more dimensions to our game (it won't work all the time).

I hope Jol can bring in a left winger in Jan then maybe it doesn't matter which 3(excluding Rasiak) are playing upfront we'll create more chances.

Hopefully if we get bridge, we could switch lee young to the right, the guy is right footed and has to play on the right it makes sense!!! everytime he bombs down the wing he always wants to turn inside, and his right foot can put a good cross in. lennon or routledge always have to start on the right, no questions asked, defenders hate playing against pacey wingers and will always give away fouls, hence the first goal at leicester. with bridge on the left, it wont be a problem with davids on the left. Wait to the end of the season and get a decent left winger!!! Right now what we need is a big target man, vieri would have been perfect...:(

I saw lee against newcastle on new years eve, completely agree that he is on the wrong side! he got in some great positions and then stopped and went back! what a waste as there were good chances but we wasted time.

Lets try this Jol, something new - it's time to try something!

Robbo,

Dawson,
King,
Gardner,

Two marking, one free (Dawson)

Davids - sitting in front of the defence.

Carrick and Jenas supporting strikers.

Routledge and Lennon flying up the wings.

Mido up front!

If defoe is a single mided player like Ginola, give his a free role!

Subs, Stalterie - Lee - Brown - Reid and Keane

Keane may even be better in the free role as he is so good but unpredictable!

Come on Jol, lets see something new and somethnig that could work towards more than two goals a week

11:27 AM, January 16, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Come on guys, lets look at the facts.
We play A tall target man upfront yet we have no wingers???
We play 4 essentially central midfield players, which is designed not to concede goals, the only way this would be effective is if you drop your target man and use the 4 midfielders we play (who are all good passers) with BOTH Defoe and Keane.
I would try the above while Mido is away
Defoe is quality so is Keane the difficulty is keeping them both happy. I dont think Rasiak is that bad either he just has no confidence left at all.

I don't care how he played at Derby, let's hope Jol has kept the receipt and takes him back to Argos.

Against the Crisp Munchers he was ill at ease on the ball, had no first touch not to mention his naff feints and totally readable 'turns' when he was fannying around with the ball.

Kalou and Kuyt WILL sign from Feyenoord before the window closes.

Not sure i would switch Lee to the right, and not sure we NEED (another) big target man.

I just feel we lack genuine width (without Lennon) and creativity in midfield.

A left back (maybe Bridge) would be top of my shopping list, along with a (decent) left footed winger. We could also do with a CB that improves the squad and obvioulsy a replacement for Rasiak.

Got a funny feeling both Routledge and Defoe will not be playing for us next season?

Can't see us signing both Kuyt & Kalou in Jan?
Infact either.

Offload Rasiak and that's still 5 strikers.

Can you see Feyenoord selling them BOTH? I can't.
(Kalou still plays for Feyenoord, right?)

Kuyt has also stated that he wants to wait until the summer for a move.

I can see us possibly replacing Rasiak with a short term loan deal otherwise it will all be done in the Summer.

All rubbish.

Not one of them good enough to wear the shirt.

Routledge? Hopeless. Rasiak - worse than toothache. Reid? Second string Republic player. Kelly? The next bus to Celtic leaves in 20 mins. Do you need sandwiches?

If their wages are low and their contract long keep them. I keep seeing people diss Bunjevcevic, but from what I heard he earns very little for a Premiership player. We need some strength in depth so its great to have players like him happy to play in our reserves.

Our current fullbacks quality?

Y.P.Lee got ran ragged on saturday and Stalteri got sent off ! Quality indeed.

They're shyte.

Stalteri doesn't know how to go past the halfway line, and when he does he stops and turns back, like a fish out of water.

Bruce Lee flies down the wing often neglecting his defensive duties and when he gets, maybe 80% there he either 1) cuts onto his right foot where he wastes his chance and usually looses the ball or 2) puts in a cross with his left foot, resulting in a goal kick for the oppo.

Must admit though his finishing has always been a bit inconsistent. He is someone who can score absolutely magic goals and his tricks & flicks are a beauty to watch. Then next match he couldnt hit a cow's arse with a banjo!

I completely agree with the initial comments about Defoe. I think he is a great finisher but when things aren't going his way he is not a team player. You only had to see his reaction to his teammates against Leicester when yet again he shot instead of passing. Against West Brom he got a chance to start and put in absolutely no effort and was nearly as bad as rasiak. I want him to come good and dont want us to sell him but he has to play for THFC and not himself.

Defoe is not and never has been a team player. outside the box he is bone idle. Now Pamarot has gone we have no full back cover except Kelly who wants away.We are desperate for left sided width and a decent cover for Mido(if Roma let him stay)

Re: Earlier comments about why we don't create chances.

Surely it's because we have no left winger, often no right winger due to Jol's prefering a tougher central midfielder in that position and a midfield playmaker not currently of top 4 standard (Jenas). These are the key positions with regard to incisive forward play and we're so clearly lacking that I find it a tribute to Jol's tactical nous and the players ability that we're still in 4th position. Imagine this team with two or three more top drawer players and another year of playing together.
Surely during this exciting process of speedy development it would be better to focus on the many positives than mull depressively on the far fewer negatives, no matter how glaringly they present themselves.
Once Jol has sorted the midfield the strikers will score more goals and the defence will be less exposed.
Good things come to those who wait and Martin's team has only been going a year.
Don't lose the faith.

I personally would like to see us take a few more "pot shots" from around the opposing area. It is all well and good trying to play it through the defense or "over the top" but i feel we dont take enough oppotunities to shoot especially when we have some great striker's of the ball (Davids, Carrick and Tainio).
As for Defoe his attitude may stink but his finishing is as clinical as a surgeon's.

Re: Defoe.

I seem to remember similar things being said about 'enry when he first arrived at arse*** but w***er soon sorted him out. I believe Jol will do the same for Defoe. If not, he will go and we'll bring in a worthy replacement. This clubs ambitions won't dissolve because one player leaves.

why oh why all the fuss ? buy this player, sell that player. maybe jol is happy with what hes got, maybe he thinks it just needs time to gel as a team. lets face it, we were all optimistic in the summer, the most for years. if anyone had said we would be 4th in the 2nd week of jan, i know i would have thought is he having a laugh.
yes we want to qualify for europe, preferably the champions league, the way things are going we're in with a shout. lets not forget what happened to Leeds - i know they were financially mismanaged, but champions league semis 1 year, 2 years later away to wolves on a saturday !
we dont want the team to mature too quick - have faith and patience.
oh, and this applies to everyone except Rasiak who is shite and can feck off to championship football now if Jol has got change of a tenner.............

Agree with most of what you've said Cheshunt Yid but
"Maybe Jol is happy with what he's got"? What! Happy with no left winger, no left back cover and no decent big striker cover? Are you sure?
I think he knows exactly what's needed and he won't buy unless the 'right' player is available. I also suspect he would like more cash than is being offered to him judging from some of the things he's been quoted as saying recently.

Agree with last comment - we are 4th for Christ sake...some people are just never happy. Was at the game Saturday and thought we played very well and we're unlucky to not get a point.

Remember we were playing the Euro champions who on current form are one of the best sides in Europe.

As Carragher said afterwards, Spurs are one of the toughest teams Liverpool have played at home ALL season including Euro games...

22 games played 40 points and only 4 league losses. Considering this is Jol's first full season in charge, is it not good enough?

This is the team that started our last league game from the season before last under Pleat...Anyone care to swap?

The problem is as we have had such a great start under Jol are expectation levels grow all the time, and then when we have a couple of bad results everyone starts moaning and saying which player should be sold etc. I think we are doing superb this season ( Apart from cup results ). We are very hard to beat. I do feel we need to create abit more in games, but you can have it all over night. We are moving in the right direction, and alot faster than most people thought. Realsistically we will not get into the Champions league this season, but even if we finish 5th or 6th, it will be our highest premiership finish ever and am sure we will improve even more. So lets all be grateful that we have so many good young players who are going to get even better. I am sure in a couple of seasons we will be right up there challenging the big boys. It just takes time. So lets just get behind the team. Come on you Spurs!

calm down el !!! happy with what hes got - yes he could do with left back cover, i dont think andy reid has shown what hes really capable of on left midfield yet. he needs a run of a dozen games. everyone slated jenas before he signed, now hes had a good run hes settled in - would all those doubters want to sell him now ? think not. we just need a left back and a striker, then a consistent team.
glad the last few comments are now positive rather than all this slating spurs.

i think it was sed in 'the sun' that: "mido is occasional, keane is essential and defoe IS JUST THERE!"

I used to think defoe was a good player but the 'grace period' of his top form has passed.

I think Iaquinta is the way to go, corradi next and bridge should be snapped up as soon as possible.

Anyone agree/disagree?

While i completely agree with the comments about defoe, the think the problem is more obvious , look at our midfeild ,tanio, davids, jenas ,and carrick all fantastic players but all CENTRAL midfielders no width no blistering pace ,like say lennon who is an amazing buy for 1 million but hes not a starting regular, i think lets get Boa morte as he could play wide or behind the front two

Another 2 goals for Barnard tonight.
That's now 15 Goals in 14 Games
To go with 17 in 17 last season.

Rasiak also scored with an overhead scissor kick!!

Would like to see Barnard at least on the bench v Villa, unless we sign a striker before the weekend.

Not saying he will/can do anything but when is he ever get a chance to be involved?

He'll turn 22 this year and will probably want to start getting some first team football so if he doesn't get a look in we could lose him and that would be a shame.

Nothing better than a product of your own coming through the ranks and he has to better than Rasiak.

Yep I'm pro Barnard, pro Defoe, and lets get ZIEGLER back from Germany because he's quality.

I disagree with comments made about Keane, as he's chucked his toys out of the pram on MORE than one occasion at spurs - remember under Hoddle for example? No-one likes being out of the side, but it's how you respond to it. Rasiak, Routledge, Ifil, Jackson and the like appear to have responded well in the reserves, beating Norwich 5-0... lets use the squad depth we STILL have even though we just sold 3 players for about 7 million, get the wingers playing regularly, bang some goals in, qualify for Europe and STOP WHINGEING! We're heading for our best finish since Venables was in charge so think on...Rant over...

I also think the so-called "Champions League" (Should still be called European Cup or League, as only about a quarter of them ARE Champions!)is way beyond our capabilities at the moment, even though the cash would help us out a great deal, and we might do OK.
Look at Everton scraping in at 4th Place, dumped out, then out of UEFA cup too! Too much too soon and now struggling in the league, though just starting to pick up admittedly.

Slow, steady progression and building is the way to go. Mix that with UEFA cup experience and bringing your own talent through the ranks and suddenly you're challenging with the big boys... Unless you have the help of a Billionaire, and then it all gets a bit silly...

Yes Walcott is an expectional talent but if he doesn't want to come (which appears so) then we are wall banging. Bridge however is another matter, maybe because Chelski seem reluctant to sell him and only want to ship him out of loan is a factor?
We certainly need permanent competiton/cover so it's possible we are looking elsewhere, but i still think Bridge would be a great acquisition even if only on loan until the end of season, and then a permanent signing can be targeted.

Anyone rater Pompey's Taylor?
I read that Fulham were keen on him but if they loan Bridge then thay won't need him. Not sure how good he is but scored a wonder goal earlier this season v Sunderland. He's English, young, wouldn't cost much and would imagine his wages are low too. Any thoughts? Also J-Lloyd Samuel anyone, pretty much the same as Taylor as above.

If Defoe is sulking then let him. If he doesn't want to play for us then fine.

Quite frankly he just hasn't done it this season, the fact he had a storming few seasons before now is irrelevant.

Defoe leaving would not be the end of the world, especially if we could get good money for him. We could get someone in who's got a better attitude for starters.

I agree fully that Defoe has to stay because he is the only natural finisher at the club, but i do not agree that we should feel priveleged to have him!

No player is bigger than the club and it`s fair to say he has not put the effort in just because he`s been sitting on the bench.

Why did we sell Kanoute? Yes he had talent when he could be bothered, but his wrong attitude was what made his departure.
Agree with his talent or not, he is better than Rasiak!
But talent is not enough to get a team in the top 6.
TALENT ans ATTITUDE is the key/
Defoe`s talent is not in question, but recently his attitude has.
The corner flag incident was a classic example!
He refused to put it back, but who did run over to speed up our chances of getting a valuable point?
Mido, an on loan striker who`s own attitude has been questioned by clubs, who clearly shows a heart to play for club and for the team.

Defoe will get his chance again and i`m confident he will hit the net on a regular basis given a run.
But he has to have the heart to battle for a place and play for Spurs!

12:59 PM, January 18, 2006

Rasiak soon will be as good as Mido. I'm sure, I have seen how he was playing in Groclin Dyskobolia Grodzisk Wlkp. We can depend on the time.
