Spurs go second.

Spurs continue their best ever start to a Premiership campaign after they beat Everton 2-0 thanks to goals from Mido and Jermaine Jenes.

Regular readers of The Shelf will know that I haven’t been too impressed with what Jenes has done for Spurs so far this season but I was always hoping for a Carrick effect. Start awful and then build up to regular, consistent, good performances. For the first 55 minutes Jenes looked poor but put in an excellent cross for the opening goal. This assist visibly boosted his confidence and the attacking midfield man actually started making effective forward runs. A few minutes later he attacked the open space in the Everton box and headed in Defoe’s cross to make the points safe. I hope that this goal and assist will be the confidence Jenes needs to push his performance on to a higher level. I have probably been a bit harsh on him thinking where he has come from. Sourness, who has the man management abilities of a slug, has clearly sucked the confidence out of Jermaine and could be one of the reasons for his suspect performances in a Spurs shirt.

Other highlights included Aaron Lennon who produced a fine performance on the right and Michael Dawson and Ledley King’s strong performance at the back and going forward for corners and set pieces. Weak spots continue to be Edgar Davids on the left. He comes in and it leaves us short of width over on that side. A quick counter attack could leave Lee out of position and the back four stretched. This is not a criticism of Davids, an excellent player who has put in some brilliant performances for Spurs but of the system. I hope he isn’t booked next week as he will miss the scum game. Fingers crossed.

Spurs now sit 2nd, five points above the gipos from Woolwich.

COYS!

I heard Davids had a very good game for us, that it was Reid who struggled. Sky Ratings gave Davids a 7 or 8 I believe and Reid a 6. It's obvious he's not the strongest left winger but he can tuck in with Carrick and Jenas allowing Lennon to prowl in behind the strikers and cut out wide on the right. It may not be the most balanced formation but Davids lifts the whole team when he plays. Reid has looked out of sorts with the exception of the 'Boro match at the start of the season, and cover should be brought in come January.

Please Martin....Rest Davids next week!!! We Really want him against the scum, we WILL beat them!
i've no doubt that we are a better team player for player than them, and probably will be for a few years now.
just seems hard to get used to Spurs actually being a great side again!

Davids should NOT be playing on the left wing he did have good game though but that was because he moved so far in-field. Reid only got a 6 rating because he came on too late to have any effect on a game spurs had already won.

Davids,Carrick in the middle Jenas on the right and either lennon or Reid on the left is the best line up for us.Lenon used to play on left at Leeds so why not for us? jenas looked a lot more influencial on the right wing and releived under pressure Stalteri who just like Lee sometimes finds it difficult on his own with no cover on him.Lennon is all well and good but as youngster and he is a slight figure he cant provide necessary cover on Stalteri,Jenas in front of him will always be a better bet.reid or lenon should battle it out for the left wing.By the way any chance that we can get Ziegler back? apprently struggling at Hamburger SV and if he is going to warm the bench let im warm our bench, where he belongs to.

Spot on commentary. JJ really picked it up after the cross.

Good point about Davids having 4 cards. Can't sit him though. We need results from these games & that is why we have the big squad, so we can go out play with aggression. I think Davids is experienced enough to avoid a booking unless its necessary.

I like Teemu Tanio over Andy Reid on the bench. I know he is more comfortable in central midfield but with Carrick, Jenas, Davids in front of him & he looked good down the right, why not have a look at him down the left.

Can't see moving Lennon to the left. He's 18yrs old & man of the match for Fulham & Everton. That's 2 oif the last 3 EPL matches. It ain't broke don't fix it.

Same line-up as last week vs. Man U. Keane, Tanio, Naybet, Reid, Cerny on the bench.

Serious questions need to be asked about Reid. The way he is playing at the minute he shouldn't even be on the bench. For Ireland against Switzerland it was the same story, not once did he beat his man, his crossing was dreadful and quite rightly he was taken off in the second half. Can he step up to the mark?

I agree with the comment on Reid (1.54pm). I have nothing against him personally and have stuck up for him many times last season but i think hes had plenty of time now to settle in and its pretty obvious he aint up to the required standard.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what teams would potentially want to sign Reid? I cant think of any who would waste money on him?!?

Bring back Ziegler and im sure it would give a better balance to the team as a whole than Reid.
