Striker joins and other news.

Ten minutes ago the headline for this article was: "Window slams shut with no new striker" The official site has just upstaged me and have announced that we have signed Grzegorz Rasiak from Derby County. Clearly he isthe new fourth choice striker. He will add height to our attacking options and cover for Mido when suspended / injured.

From the official site:

A powerful 6ft 3" frontman, Rasiak has already scored five goals this season with three coming at international level where he has been capped 20 times.

"Rasiak is a tall target man, a hard working, honest player with a good goal scoring record,” commented Head Coach, Martin Jol. “He scored 45 goals in 103 games. He is a regular in the Polish international side which leads qualifying Group 6 just above England and he scored two against Israel in their recent 3-2 victory."

"A lot is said about making the step up from the Championship to the Premiership, but Ashton and Bent have shown that for good players it is not such a big step. I believe he will do well for us and that he will be an asset to the squad."

The Poland international joins Teemu Tainio, Paul Stalteri, Tom Huddlestone, Wayne Routledge, Aaron Lennon, Edgar Davids, Jermaine Jenas and Lee Young-Pyo in joining the Club since the end of last season, considerably strengthening Martin’s squad options.

COYS!

Below is the original article before Spurs sneaked in this last signing:

The transfer window is closed. Spurs have been one of the busiest clubs in Europe today and overall across the whole window. The likes of Routledge, Davids, Tainio, Stalteri, Lennon and Huddlestone have joined with Lee and Jenas signing on the dotted line today. Edman has left us along with Davies and of course Kanoute.

There is no doubt in my mind that the squad today is better than back in May 2005. We have serious strength and depth throughout the team especially in the midfield positions. Money has been spent and I honsestly believe that this is the best Tottenham team since we won the FA CUP in 1991. In fact, in many respects it is better than that team.

People are going to point to the fact that we missed out on replacing Kanoute. True, when kanoute left it was hoped that we would replace him. We probably did go for various people but couldn't get them this time around. Kuyt would have joined but he decided he owed Feyenoord one more season and that is why it didn't happen. If you watched the messgae boards today people were getting more and more desparate linking us with all sorts of different names. However, thanfully, the club did not get desparate. How many times have we seen millions of pounds wasted because the club panicked - Rebrov £11 million for example. We did not rush out and just buy anyone - we don't operate like that anymore.

We will miss Mido's height for his suspended games but we have Defoe and Keane to come in. People will say they can't play together and last season I would have agreed. But how many chanches did they get in a proper game for them to actually get a chance to work together - not many. What we will have to do is play to their strengths and that is along the floor. While they play there has to be no more hoof from the centre backs as it will get us nowhere. We now have the players with the ability to play they way Keane and Defoe need it playing for them to be succssful together. I mean there would be pleanty of clubs ready to bite our hands off to be able to announce their front two strikers on a Saturday as Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane, two World Class internationals.

The other option tonight would have been to panic- blow a wedge load of cash on an average player that would not improve us. We now have the money in the bank ready for January to get what we really want. (update: at least the Pole will be cheap!)

Keep the faith lads, Jol knows what he is doing.

COYS!

News from the BBC Sport website:-

Spurs agree Rasiak deal with Rams

Rasiak had been close to a move to Wolves
Tottenham have agreed terms with Derby to sign Polish international striker Grzegorz Rasiak.
Capped 20 times the 26-year-old Rasiak, who had also interested Wolves, scored 17 goals for County last season as they reached the play-offs.

Spurs coach Martin Jol told the club's website: "Rasiak is a tall target man, a hard working, honest player with a good goal scoring record.

"He is a regular in the Polish side I believe he will do well for us."

Wolves had been keen to sign Rasiak and the Rams had agreed a fee, thought to be £2.25m, but the Polish striker was unable to agree personal terms.

Sunderland also expressed an interest in Rasiak earlier in the summer.

(p.s. - i don't quite know why the BBC have placed it under Torquay! Either someone's eyelids are too heavy to notice, or they thought that Greg's abilities and reputation was more suited to the lowly seaside town!)

Can't say I know anything much about him, but he has a very decent goals to games rate at both Division 2 and International level, so he seems a decent buy in the circumstances.
I assume its a fairly low fee and for that we get a proven international striker to warm the bench as 4th choice until January, when we can strengthen again, if Rasiak doesn't deliver.
Rather than talk of panic buys, this seems a sensible bit of business. The only question marks are over why we let Fredi go.

Reminds me of the time we signed a certain Andy Booth a few years ago... hope Rasiak turns out to be better than Booth though... :)

Jol mentioned last week during a BBC interview that he had a "list" of players he could have signed.
He would have weight all his options and decided the contigencies when his top choices; Kuyt and Lucarelli can't joined this transfer window.Rasiak is one of those contingencies, I believed.Lets trust Jol that is the best option under very difficult circumstances, we don't always get what we want.2 of 3 is good work and we do need a big man upfront when if it is gamble.I think Rasiak would have costs us about 2mil and is a reasonable price backup striker.
Considering Liverpool's problem, we have done fairly well in the transfer market.

rasiak is a very good player with bundles of skill . if he makes the transition from 1st to prem. it will be an excellent signing. why is everyone saying they have never heard of him and slagging him off in the same breath. give the boy a chance

I think when we sign a player, like this, more by default than first choice, we should give them a chance, as MJ says, he is an honest hard working centre forward.

Lets not forget how we arrived with Martin Jol as manager in the first place, sometimes things just happen & you get lucky.

Why did we sell Kanoute ? I think it was a gamble on the part of Levy and Jol to net Kuyt.We need the cash to outbid Liverpool & Newcastle who is also in the market for him.
Levy do not want to commit the 12mil required as he value Kuyt at less tha 10mil.No one(spurs, reds & magpies) at the mean time dare to make a official bid for Kuyt b'cos of this complicated late scramble for M Owen and for fear of escalating a bidding war.(Which was the case for Owen).
So while the whole world wait for bated breath for Owen saga to end.Feyenoord got fed up of waiting (I presume so was Kuyt) and therefore his official announcement to stay in Holland.
If you can that story further, you can even say the Jenas saga also complicates our attempts to capture Kuyt.We knew the magpies have to negotiate wuth Spurs to get the right sum on Sunday to outbid Pools.
Our consolation is that we probably have the midfield buidling programme completed.(Some may think is overdone).Come this January, Kuyt would be our no 1 priority.Bu then hopefully our nearest rival for Kuyt signature would have run dry;Liverpool.

While some may think the Rasiak deal was dodgy, sloppy and desparate, I like to think that it was a satisfying campaign.
We got a weak position at leftback sorted out and add to our ranks one of the best english midfielders.A lot of clubs would have envied our captures.
Not only that, the management have thier recruiting contingencies plan out. Levy was trying to seal the deal with Lucarelli in Italy while Jol back home standby for the back up plan that was rasiak, which we execute at the very last moment. We have at least didn't come short on the strikers department for 4 months.
Boros, Everton and Newcastle are the other clubs who have done equally well in the transfer window.
Look at the mess over at Liverpool, we definetely would not want to be In Benitez shoes.
