24 hours to go!

There are now less than 24 hours to go before the transfer window slams shut. By the time it re-opens the season will be over half way through and lack of action now in a few key areas could wreck our chances, once again, of a top six finish.

Up to now the window has been pretty productive for Spurs. Pace and width have been brought in with the signings of Lennon and Routledge. The right back position has been strengthened with Stalteri, Tainio has joined along with Edgar Davids and Davies was flogged for £3.5 million to Everton. Kanoute also left us for a profit which is good business assuming he is replaced.

If you believe the message boards and the hundreds of people who claim they are “In the know” Spurs are still trying to buy people for various different positions. The one that seems an almost 100% banker is Jermaine Jenas. Clearly the midfield needs even more strengthening as we don’t already have Brown, Davis, Davids, Tainio, Carrick and Mendes to battle it out for the two spots available so if we landed him and did not strengthen in attack then it would have been a backward step.

It looked like Lee from PSV was on his way but that has apparently stalled. A strengthened left back would not be sniffed at but once again it is not a key weakness. The key weakness as we all know at the moment is the choice of the front players. While all very good various combinations do not work together. We sold Kanoute, in my opinion a good bit of business as he was prone to disappearing and his goals to game ratio wasn’t all that. However we now have only one tall striker who is currently looking at a four game suspension. This could force Jol into pairing Keane and Defoe together – both gifted players but a pairing that hasn’t really jelled. A four game run may give the partnership time to actually work as we have better players than when we last tried it but we do like to play a direct ball from goal kicks and it is never going to pay off with two little front men. This is the one area we have to improve on today. Various names have been linked including Kuyt, Cole and now Sidney Govu and it is vital that we pick up at least one of these before midnight. Failing to do so could scupper our good start. Here’s hoping!

Its a no brainer to think we urgently need a tall striker, otherwise we need to play the ball to the feet at Defoe and Keane - which I know we can't seem to do with the defenders lumping it in the air at times. No panic stiker buys please!

The FA's considering Mido's appeal against the red card against Chelski. Hopefully they will reduced it to yellow.

Re. Jenas he is very good a getting forward into goal scoring positions or creating goals. We have too many similar midfielders who are wingers or defensive types. We need ackting types - but at the moment we only have mendes (who is not getting games) and Davids (who has three yellow cards in the last three games and building up for a one game ban. I think Jenas will be a good buy. Unlike at the toon, he will not be in a goldfish position at spurs and could therefore become a better player under us.

A lot of reports of Jenas and Lee deals as good as done.
Vey disappointed with the Dirk Kuyt affair. Its looking very similar to the Van Bommel case.
Both players express willingness to come only for the deals to fall through.I thought we were rather sloppy to just let Kanoute go without having a concrete replacement lined up.Hope it don't costs us.
I blame it on the Owen affair partially. We are caught in a 5 parties (Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle, Feyenoord and Real Madrid)tansfer saga involving 3 players; Kuyt, Owen Jenas that complicates our pursuit of Kuyt.

How can you say that a left back is not a key area? That is THE key area - we played a right back against Chelsea on Saturday, that's not right.

Strikers are only as good as the midfield that supply them, and i cant see why Keane and Defoe cant be tried again in the short term with the likes of Davids, Carrick, Lennon, Reid Routledge and Tainio - instead of what is was last season - Redknapp, Brown, Jackson, Mendes and Davis. Come on the midfield has been transformed, its a hell of a lot pacier!

But yes in the long term a striker is needed.. perhaps Kuyt in the January window.

Is MJ considering operating a five man mid field as another option. It has been effective at Chelski, Arsescum etc?
JJ as AMF behind Defoe or RK?
Competitive ball winners/passers in Davids/Carrick with goal scoring wingers- Routledge/reid?
All midfield pacy as hell?
Looks good on paper- doesn't it??

I dont understand how anyone can call signing JJ a backwards step! He is a young PROVEN English midfielder with ability to scare defences with speed and skill. The fact is we have the money to spend to bring in JJ, Lee and another worldclass striker but for once we have a management team who only buy who they want rather than their arms being forced to sign a quick fix (rebrov anyone!!). The reality is yes we do need a striker to add to the 3/4 curently at the club but one thing is for sure when we sign him he will be because Jol wants him. The thing that I really dont get is as Spurs supporters how we can complain about signing a top quality player like JJ. He surely is the player that can start to put balls through to our strikers feet meaning its not impossible to play 2 small strikers.

I AGREE THAT A STRIKER IS NEEDED BUT, WHY DONT WE GIVE BARNARD A CHANCE UNTIL JAN, THEN IF ITS NOT WORKING TRY AND KUYT IN JANUARY.

BARNARD SCORED 17 GOALS IN 17 RESSY GAMES LAST YEAR. HE'S A BIG STRONG LAD AND I THINK HE DESERVES A CHANCE.

OF COURSE THERE'S EL MORRY WHEN HE'S FIT AND HE MAY LOOK GOOD PLAYING JUST OFF JD OR RK.

WE HAVENT GOT THE PLAYERS TO PLAY SAME SYSTEM AS CHESLEA BECAUSE ANND REID IS MORE OF A BALL PLAYER THAN A RUNNER. ROUTLEDGE WOULD WORK IN THAT SYSTEM I AGREE BUT WOULD MEAN ANOTHER BUY. I LIKE THE SOUND OF JENAS DAVIDS AND CARRICK IN A 3 MAN MF THOUGH.

Jenas is as good as signed. This is a great deal for the club. He is one of the best young midfielders in the country and who better to cajoule him into realising his talent than Davids. Lee is a good buy for left back and one of Carlton Cole, Sidney Govou or Lucarelli (top scorer in Serie A) should complete our spending. We should let Micheal Brown and Sean Davis leave, and loan out Huddlestone to someone like Wigan so he can get some good Premiership experience. I'm not to happy about the reports that Ziegler is about to leave. He was one of most exiting players last year and offers more pace on the flank than Reidy, so is a very good alternative. COYS
