Davids to sign

The club has just announced that Edgar Davids is on his way to Spurs on a free transfer from Milan. All that now needs doing is to agree personal terms with the player and hope he passes his medical.

Legend Martin Jol said:

He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a playmaker, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years.

“This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.

“It’s terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team’s performance. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example.”

This is a fantastic signing for Spurs. With it being a free trasnfer it means we can pay the sort of wages that this type of player requires. He will lead from the middle of the pitch and is the ball winning midfielder we have been crying out for for years and years and years. We also have a lot of cash left sitting around thanks to Chelsea and shrewd running of the club so we could expect further names later.

COYS!

Wicked news! Just the experienced player we needed to help all the young guns we've got! He may be the one that will give us that final push towards 4th spot... Can anyone imagine the impact he will have on the training ground, when people like Huddlestone, Ziegler, Lennon, Routledge, etc. realize that they are training next to a top world-class footballer?! He will make them push harder and harder... Only good stuff can come from this signing.

Fantastic news.... shame he's the wrong side of 30 so dont know if he can 38+ games next season but great for the young kids; great for team spirit after winngin the peace cup to come back to a worldclass player; great for shirt sales as well no doubt.

I need to get to the opticians in the morning to get my Edgar Specs sorted

I'm pleased to see him arrive, its exciting and good for the profile of the club...but I do fear that he is past his best now. I imagine that this signing means one of Brown and Davis will go, and possible both as we now have 6 CMF's gunning for 2 spots...I'll be sad to see either go, Brown is spurs thru and thru and Davis has a lot of potential... But I have faith in Big Mart... Anyone know where I can buy Davids style glasses and fake dreadlocks?!

Don't get me wrong here I am excited about seeing him play against boro and for the rest of the season but at 32 he is hardly the box to box player we a crying out for.

Can't grumlble at a free though. He can keep Keane of Defoe company on the bench.

Wow, just read the news on the team's website and am stunned! Didn't expect this move to be honest, but with the Dutch connection and on the free, it isn't too far of a stretch. Was this a case of Jol asking Levy to go get him? What will this mean to a player like, say, Tainio, or even Carrick in terms of playing time?

not sure i can begin to figure out the starting 4 in midfield now. We have to assume ED will start pretty much most games, and with Jol's golden boy in Carrick next to him... what happens to taino, mendes et al.

I can picture it now come our first game with the gooners, Davids kicking Reyes and Fabregas all over the park, before setting up Defoe for the winning goal, heres hoping eh??!!

It seems like a gamble, but the premiership could be just the tonic ED needs to revitalize his career, and Jol's Spurs are a soft landing for him, while London befits his celebrity status. So, a good gamble worth taking perhaps. Guti may have more to offer, but the Real player's personality is a question mark. Not so with ED. Although flamboyant in many ways, he is a leader on the pitch, and some would argue where it counts most -- in the engine room. ED will embody Jol's will much like Roy Keane is an on-field extension of Sir Fergie.

Go Yids!!

Big Mart can obviously see him doing a job. Can't complain on a free though. What i would like to see now is Davis and brown offloaded and the club spend some of this compensation money. Maybe swap Davis and some cash for Malbranque or make another worldclass signing in Sneijder. These are the players that are going to take us to the new level.

Old man , trouble maker, unwanted by all the big clubs, injury prone.
Dont get excited.... Will take him 6 months to read the pace of the prem and by then he will have been kicked to bits by the prem neanders.

1 good year at best from a fading star. Another Jol boo boo.

Earlier on SQUARE FOORBALL...

Edgar Davids and Tottenham Hotspur were always going to be a rumour waiting to happen. Davids who is rumoured to be 87 years old has been linked with a move a variety of Premiership clubs since he turned 70. The reasons for the delay in his decade-long 'imminent' move to England were unclear but they may be due to a variety of possibilities:

1. A perceived lack of respect afforded to senior citizens
2. The loss of many sub-post offices will make drawing his pension more difficult
3. Too many interested purchasers - and an unwillingness to upset any of them.
4. An honest agent who is unprepared to take part in the seedier practices of his trade
5. None of the above.

But still the Daily Mail are convinced that Spurs looking for an experienced central midfielder with Edgar Davids a possibility.

Davids may be many things, and one of them is 'experienced'. But one of the things he isn't is the barnstorming midfielder that dominated Serie A midfields in the late 1990s.

The Surinam born midfielder has been on the slide since he hit 30 in 2003. In January 2004 Juventus ended his excellent, seven year stay in Turin by sending him on loan to Barcelona. The Catalan club weren't overly impressed and failed to sign him up on a free transfer. Davids was able to pick up a contract at Inter Milan, but after an unsuccessful year there he is again available.

West Ham were linked in June - but unsurprisingly that came to nothing.

Davids has had 14 seasons at the top level - and high energy players rarely last that long. If Spurs go for him it could only be as a back-up defensive midielder - but at Davids wages this would be somewhat odd. There is better value available out there.

Fantastic news. The kind of player we are crying out for. We have lots of good central midfielders but no-one who is able to bind the team together, get the best out of everyone around them and grab the name by the scruff of the neck. As Jol says, he will lead by example. This signing can only make the team stronger. He's not at the peak of his powers anymore but he is still a very, very good player. Roll on Pompey, cant wait. Come on you Spurs!

It will also be interesting to see how ED's "charisma" (as Jol calls it) affects the other Spurs. Will they respect ED the player, ED the man, like they seem to do with Naybet, for instance. Will Defoe et al lose focus or try to emulate ED's flamboyant ways.. I wonder what his impact will truly be?

Gentlemen,
I have to say, this man WAS a very good player. Emphasis on the WAS!
Really can not see him influencing the game in the premiership. It is too frenetic, I'll predict he plays no more than 17 games, then like West ham will fade and die!
p.s
Martin I am over 30, kick a ball with both feet, I'll come on a free and will bite legs for you every Saturday for £20,000 per week.
p.p.s
Maybe that's the strategy, all our central midfield players will be suspended for a quarter of the season, hence we need so many!

Hang on a second. Aint he another defensive midfielder?? We've already got loads of them. Looking at his career stats he has scored 27 Goals in over 300 games. We need more goals from the midfield, But will Davids give us this ?

isn't it great just when arse'lickers lose their only world class centre midfielder we get what we've been craving in this young team a proven world class CM wiv great experience who's still got at least 2 years of good footie left in him, and 4 free lets just hope he does sign. Cos other wise i've creamed my self for nothing!!!!!

davids dreadlocks are cool i hear he smokes alot of weed anyway hes a bit old but not to old ( roy keane for example )he will dominate aginst most teams in the middle of the park through sheer class alone. the man is class no disputing that and its a massive signing for tottenham. this might actually be the catalyst that all revolutions reqire to reach there goals. cant wait for the arsescum game hurry up!!

9.04, Keane and Viera don't score that many either. Maybe more that Davids, I havn't seen the stats. He is without doubt still a force as a tough tackling play maker. Mark my words on this one. We will get goals from the wings this term. Jol has always said his playing philosophy relies on pacy tricky wingers. RM is sorted with Wayne, LM could be getting there with Reto, who has tricks and pace too.

Used to be a quality player, Barcelona didnt want him, Inter didnt play him, rumour is they caught him smoking a cheeky bifter after training and thats why Inter let him go. Seems like the kind of player Bolton would sign too, past his best. Dont care what he does as long as he injures any Chelscum/Arseholes.

Don't underestimate Davids. A couple of months ago I saw a programme on Barca and showed the time they brought in Davids. The medical staff there said that he's the fittest player they've ever dealt with. Those of you who say he's past it will be eating their words at the end of the season....

Lets be honest

We have just signed a world class player if he can have the impact that Naybet had last year great!

We have been the butt of so many near misses that it is nice to get a quality player at last

Brown is off to Wigan, Davis was going to Everton but after Mendes stormed off the pitch in the Peace Cup Final he is being offloaded back home.

Keane and Mido look a better bet then Defoe and donkey but watch out for one more big signing upfront in the next week
